The aliens were melting our ice caps to raise the sea level, giving themselves more territory beneath the seas, more vantage points for sea-tank attacks, and killing off some of humanity's population along with it.

Humanity becomes harder and tougher, gangs form and war for resources occurs between us all. Until the Japanese create an ultrasonic weapon, distributing this technology so we can fight back.
