FINALLY! Getting to post some cool stuff.

And what happened to those Post-Comic-Con follow ups I promised? BAH! Right out the window with those. I've been back for over a week and have been chained to my desk. Literally. Im pretty grateful for the scraps they slide under my door though. Actually there is some really really badical stuff in the works right now that I'm very lucky to be a part of. Delving back into my roots in animation...

OK. Onto this piece. This was done for my buddy Jake Forbes and his book Tokyopop’s Return to Labyrinth vol.4 which is hitting stores this month! Like the plug? No? Too bad.
He asked me to do a pin up for the magical and final 4th volume to his New York Time's best seller and I jumped like a foaming dog at the opportunity. I sort of wish I had more time however, this was only done in 2 days.

If I were to touch the surface of how much I love this movie, the design, the story, the visual fucking genius that is Brian Froud (who I TOTALLY got to meet at SDCC), David Bowie............. and his "Bowie Constricter" Yeah I said it. It would fill tomes.

Anyways that's all for now. I might post some comic pages to pass the time soon. Until then I apologize once more for the neglect and I am very grateful for all the new followers! THANK YOU!

While your wasting your time on the internet check out my heap of other blogs/sites/awesomeness!

I love this picture but, and I hope you will understand that I am not writing this as a criticism, rather a suggestion, if you ever decide to do further work on it, I think you might want to add some element to the crystal ball. While I understand the contrasts of light adding form, a hint of something within the crystal (not Bowie's hand or the more infamous anatomical area) would help to describe the shape of a sphere, rather than a flat plane. It need not fill the space, taking away the light/dark composition, perhaps just a hint of the Escher based staircase, distorted by the crystal's shape, where a sphere would normally have a highlight (or used as an inverse curve, since the passage of light through a transparent, sphere can also cause a lowlight within the sphere itself.) I feel like the style of your picture would merge nicely with that, since it has an Escher like touch in some of the detail already. I hope you aren't offended by my comment, I wouldn't have made it if I didn't think your work wasn't so good already.
(I have to confess, the idea of taking the Escher stairs, which are pictorial distortion in their own right, which were then distorted further for the whole staircase room, and distorting them again to define the curvature of a sphere is so appealing to me, I wish I could still grip tools well enough to draw that myself!

Thanks Though I won't be working on this piece anymore as it is now five years old. The image consists of my favorite themes and imagery from the film, the ball is left empty on purpose for the viewer to fill with whatever they imagine is missing (perhaps their favorite imagery from the film). It's quite obviously an image that focuses on flow of composition, mesh of concept, and illusions rather than one that focuses on realistic rendering throughout. I decided to leave the sphere blank rather than bogging it down with further detail. The viewer is plenty capable of that Part of the beauty of the film is in it's imagination.
Thanks for you thoughts.

A fitting tribute to a fond childhood memory. The original movie is admittedly very much of its age, but it seems to have ingrained itself lastingly into the psyche, thanks to the inspired visual concepts of Froud / Henson, ludicrously appropriate casting in David Bowie as Jareth (Ziggy Stardust as the Goblin King ? somehow this goes beyond the let's-put-a-rockstar-in-our-family-film trope of which the eighties were so fond of) -- and timeless narrative themes still very much present in today's fan fiction.

Since the actual artwork on display here has been amply and justly lauded in previous comments, I will not elaborate, except to mention that what attracted me first, apart from mere nostalgia, was the sheer effectiveness of the design, all fluidity and misleading symmetry (that, and the marvelously organic swarm of goblins, doing whatever goblins do behind Bowie's back).

Awesome! I'm glad it didn't go to one of the many people who just print DA stuff and claim it as their own. & yes, I love the design so much that we actually framed the shirt and have it in the master bedroom. So, very happy, you have lovely work!
