thank you, i've love to make it, but figuring out the logistics of a rope corset is ... well ... hard!

*nods* there's a lot of inspiration in past clothing. My friend Roman let me borrow this amazing book, i've been learning a lot.

its is definatly possible...but in order for it not to come apart you would have to tie each piece together individually...quite a timely affair i would think...the corset for example would be relatively "easy" in this respect...just the clasping/tying in the back would be the difficult part i think...but i think ive just come up with a solution for that typing this...so this is definatly do able...fair amount of work...obviously...but i think it would look good...course im not sure what kind of rope would be best...probaly something like a nylon so its not scratchy...

JessicaDru In reply to TheOnlyPenguin [2006-07-30 23:34:28 +0000 UTC]
nylon or silk, and yeah, it'd have to be made in individual pieces. the trick would be to make it seamless. tough task.

Perhaps if you did the rope over a fabric to hold it together, and prevent unfortunate slippage. It could possibly work, it's more a matter of what sort of rope you use. If you try this you ought to try wrapping your arm in a length of various types of rope to see what effect you get, and how hot they get

While tempted to make a comment about how I was considering the same thing... XD But, best bet would probably using a series of hooks or simliar devices which can actually be hidden beneath the rope, and allow easy access on and off. I'd suggest valcro save for the sounds it makes and rope can be some what heavy. YOu may want to decide how you want the dress to look first before you go about worrying about the legistics of it.

Ooo Ooo!!! do you think it'd work?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
ashigaru In reply to JessicaDru [2006-07-31 00:45:54 +0000 UTC]
I can make it work. It might be a bit heavy, though. If necessary, the kern (threads inside the rope) can be removed to make it lighter and more like tubular webbing. It's a tan colored rope, somewhat patterned. Like I said, you're more than welcome to it.
You might want to look into something with a bit more traditional lay (twisted rather than a braided outside casing); perhaps more like manila hemp rope, or cotton. Manila hemp might be a bit scratchy, but from what I understand, can be treated to make it less so. Cotton would be a better choice, I'd think, if you're interested in a three strand "normal" rope style. Probably easier to work with, to be certain.
Drop me a note sometime so we can figure out how to make it work, or at least get the raw material to you.

Dad was a Boatswain's Mate in the Navy. He taught me a lot about line, knotwork and rope.
What diameter were you looking at for the rope, by the way?

i'm going to have to consider this idea much more seriously to know what diameter would be best etc...

Well...I figure it would be about the same as wearing a corset. Maybe a little tighter....but that would look so awesome!!! My design for next year isn't the most practical either...but meh...it's only for one night. ^_^
