Description In May I posted a journal about my friend Vance, who had passed away. One of the things I regretted most was that I had not had the time to do the tattoo he had wanted me to do for him. So I took the time this week to go over all the reference pictures and all the notes I had, and do something I felt he would like. It was a bit of a challenge to match the palette that he usually used in his work but.. I did try to keep a more neutral, limited palette.

His gallery can still be viewed here: wreckles.deviantart.com/

Please take some time to look through it. He was a dark artist, but.. he was my friend and I miss him a great deal.

Medium: Hand cut mica stone was used to all the scales. Then metallic pigments melted over the stone to create the silvery look. Crushed mica paint for the pearl the dragon holds, watercolors, acrylic, and a little colored pencils. Very mixed media.

The frame was one I found at a thrift store and just... felt it worked.

Vance was incredible. Β I knew him personally. Β He had his art displayed at his funeral viewing. I am still heartbroken about his passing. Β

If you place this on the shop I will purchase a print or if there is another way to buy a print, I would greatly appreciate it. Β

This is so very thoughtful and truly honors Vance Trancygier's memory.Β

I do have prints available, though they are all hand stretched canvas. The original is going to his sister.

Zephyri [2014-06-16 19:30:25 +0000 UTC]

This is gorgeous Jess... I dunno what it is specifically about this piece... reminds me of jewelry a little. I do love the more muted, consistent colour palette, lends it a certain maturity (not that your other pieces don't have that, but they're always a little more whimsical, this feels more... solid?) And that frame! I am jealous of your frame finding/making abilities.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JessicaMDouglas In reply to Zephyri [2014-06-18 08:10:53 +0000 UTC]

You know, it reminds me of jewelry too. It might be the fact that it's not really painted, it's chunks of stone and melted metal that make the shapes? I really, really liked workign with this color palette, and I tried to push myself on different tones too. I may not be able to SEE them very well but I noticed that I had just given up even trying with what tones I could see and made everything flat. So i'm trying to push myself that way too.

Oh Sam.. I have SO MANY frames here now. Literally a pile of frames that I'm slowly making art for lmfao. Oddly enough I noticed I work better colorwise when I already have a frame picked out. Does that make sense to you at all?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Zephyri In reply to JessicaMDouglas [2014-06-18 22:48:34 +0000 UTC]

Aye, it makes perfect sense, it's like having a swatch to match to. I also realised the reason it makes me think of jewelry is the occasional beading I do - reminds me of a cellini spiral (4.bp.blogspot.com/_nAWXs9avYqE…

JessicaMDouglas In reply to Zephyri [2014-06-21 14:00:26 +0000 UTC]

oooooooooh oh wow that's beautiful. Dude, my step mom is sending me ALL her jewelcrafting things. I'm thinking about doing some mixed media paintings with beadwork included in them.

Zephyri In reply to JessicaMDouglas [2014-06-21 23:53:55 +0000 UTC]

I've not had time to do any beadwork in aaaages. It is a dark pit of addiction, though, when you realise how many sheer possibilities there are with it, especially combined with things like wire wrapping or kumihimo braiding. Evenmoreso when you realise there are such things as dragon scale beads Β artandtea.files.wordpress.com/…
