Not that hard. Once you have the basics down it's pretty simple. Learning can be a bit challenging right in the beginning if you think it's going to be the easiest thing in the world.

But how do you know how to make complex shapes like circles and llamas?

My llamas are just combinations of rectangles sewn together. And circles aren't hard either once you know the basics. I would recommend finding a beginners crochet book that will teach you how to do basic stitches. I kind of just make up my patterns as I go, so it's all guesswork.
