Description Jia Lu 2011, Sage, oil on canvas, 48 x 48 inches.

Finished at last! The model was a student of mine who now lives in the south of France, cultivating muscat grapes and cycling in the Avignon area. I used to paint wise men and sages when I worked in Chinese ink on paper, so this could be equally Confucius, Li Bai, Prospero, Abraham, or Zhuang Zhou dreaming he is a butterfly.

The title in Chinese is "Sage Series: Mist". The ancient Chinese sages are said to ride on clouds and mists from place to place by understanding and harnessing the forces of nature and the natural elements. I would say, like the rest of us, he appeared out of nothing and will return to nothingness.
