Description
Bowser’s elite members of the Koopa Troop, the Hammer Bros.!!
Hammer Bros. are the simple variations of the Koopas, with one simple feature, they wield and throw hammers. These guys have been around ever since the very first Super Mario Bros. and while they may not appear in many Mario games, they’re still the regulars for Bowser’s army. And now, this Hammer Bro hammer downs the competition on Project AT! So to nail it down, the Hammer Bro is a below-average cruiserweight fighter (Around the weight value of Yoshi), he has 2 deceptively high jumps and is only able to crawl.
Basic AttacksMuch like how I’ve done my take on the Metroid and how Sakurai made the Piranha Plant, this Hammer Bro in particular will be a hybrid that uses the various moves of the other variants in the Hammer Bros species, making this the Super Skrull of Hammer Bros, a Super Hammer Bro! That said, this Hammer Bro will also be “borrowing” some other hammer techniques from other games, mainly with the likes of the Mario Bros.
Starting off with his jab, it’s a 3-hit jab that starts with a straight punch, followed by a bonk with his hammer then ending it in a kick, the same kick that Koopas do whenever they kick Koopa shells. The dash attack has them sliding on their back, popping any foes in the air, this references one of the victory animations in Mario Strikers Charged Football. His side tilt has him do a lunging headbutt, referencing the tackle from Mario Strikers Charged Football, this attack slightly propelling Hammer Bro forwards; his up tilt has him take advantage of his biological turtley nature and do a small jump while elongating his neck to do a jumping headbutt, it has a decent range but requires precision and his down tilt has him stretch his neck and bring out it’s inner snapping turtle, biting low-to-the-ground, this down tilt doesn’t actually launch foes anywhere but instead only pushes the foe a little bit away while also causing a lot of hitstun, harkening to the nature of snapping turtles because when they snap, they tend not to let go.
For his side smash, he delivers a wind-up punch straight forwards, referencing the same punch from the Koopas in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, it hits pretty hard and has average frame data; his up smash has him swing his hammer overhead from back to front, slamming it onto the ground, referencing the hammer swing from Paper Mario; this hits very hard but has a ton of end lag, although this smash attack can reflect physical projectiles in a wide arc and neutralizes energy projectiles and the down smash has him stomp his feet from left to right, unleashing lightning down on each side with each stomp, referencing the stomps from the Sumo Bros in Super Mario World, this has large vertical reach with the lightning but there is quite a bit of delay with each stomp.
For his N-air, he spins in multiple circles while holding his hammer out, referencing the Super Hammer technique from Paper Mario, this hits very hard and much like the up smash, has a ton of end lag; his F-air has him swing his hammer from high to low, referencing the hammer swing from Mario and Luigi, this has a lot of start and end lag but it hurts; his B-air has him thrust his shell backwards, which is actually a nod to Bowser’s B-air back in Melee and Brawl, it has short range but it’s quick; his U-air has him swing his hammer above himself, kinda unlike Bowser Jr’s U-air and the D-air has him swing his hammer straight down, referencing his Deke in Mario Strikers Charged, this attack is capable of spiking foes if it sweetspots.
GrabsHammer Bro grabs with one arm and pummels by biting the foe’s neck. His forward throw has him lift the foe overhead with one arm then toss them forwards; his back throw has him toss the foe backwards; his up throw has him jump high into the air with the foe then throw them at an upwards angle and the down throw has him jump with the foe then piledrive them onto the ground, burying them.
Special AttacksFor Hammer Bros. neutral special, he actually has 3, all depending on button inputs. Tapping the special button has them throw a hammer, this acts just like how the Hammer Bros. use them in the games, it flies at an arc forwards, is gravity-affected, not very spammable and the hammers disappear if they collide with anything, and it deals average damage and knockback, rapidly tapping the special button has them use the fireballs from the Fire Bros, these are the most spammable projectiles thrown at a lower arc and individually, they are far weaker, dealing about as much damage as Mario’s fireballs and they have no knockback, but that damage can rack up rather quickly and finally, holding down the button has Hammer Bro. throw an Ice Ball from the Ice Bros, these are thrown in the same arc as the hammers however, they disappear after they bounce twice but they deal the most damage as well as being able to freeze foes.
His side special has him use the Boomerang from the Boomerang Bros. It effectively functions like the Boomerang item, thrown straight forwards then after reaching a set maximum distance, it homes back to Hammer Bro whenever this happens, the Boomerang becomes more powerful, the Boomerang itself deals very little damage but it does have a deceptive amount of knockback.
Next, for Hammer Bro’s up special, he uses the flying platforms from the Amazing Flyin’ Hammer Bros. from Super Mario World! This has him bring out the flying platforms and place them underneath himself, stopping his fall as he floats. The platform can move horizontally with directional input but it can’t go up or down, Hammer Bro can also use the neutral special in conjunction with up special and he can jump off it, and it doesn’t put him into freefall, although he can’t summon another flying platform until he lands on the ground. Hammer Bro can only stay on this platform for 5 seconds and once those seconds are up, the platforms disappear and this does put the Hammer Bro into freefall.
And finally, for the Hammer Bro’s down special, he jumps high into the air and comes crashing down with a ground pound so powerful that it creates a mini-earthquake, just like the Sledge Bros from Super Mario Bros. 3. It emits a large shockwave and this doesn’t look like much other than that it pushes foes away from the shockwave due to its windbox properties and if on the grund, they’ll actually be paralyzed for a short bit, although due to the move’s high endlag, it can be difficult to capitalize on the paralysis, but if fast enough, the Hammer Bro could start a combo on the vulnerable opponent.
Overall, when playing as the Hammer Bro., much like a true turtle, you need to be somewhat defensive and you ESPECIALLY need to be bouncy, fighting with throwing hammers as you hop about, just like a Hammer Bro.
Final Smash: Boom Boom and Pom PomFor the Hammer Bros. Final Smash, he calls upon the aid of Bowser’s mad lad and mad ladette, Boom Boom and Pom Pom! Hammer Bro disappears in a puff of smoke and Boom Boom and Pom Pom drop onto the stage and Boom Boom spins about the battlefield with his spinning arms so fast that the ground catches on fire and Pom Pom uses ninjutsu makes clones as they throw all their shurikens diagonally upwards, nowhere is safe and this deals a ton of multi-hitting damage then launching foes after one giant shuriken is thrown, causing the foes to be launched away. Afterwards, Boom Boom and Pom Pom vanish in a puff of smoke for the Hammer Bro to resume the fight.
MiscellaneousFor colors, since the Hammer Bros. are a species with their own subspecies, there was just enough to pull to make these alts. The first, second, third and fourth alts give him a red, blue, cyan and gold color scheme respectively, referencing the Fire Bros., Boomerang Bros., Ice Bros. and Gold Bros.; the fifth alt gives the Hammer Bro a black color scheme, referencing the Hammer Bros’ appearance in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars as well as the Army Hammer Bros. from Super Princess Peach; the sixth alt gives him blue skin and a black shell and helmet, referencing the Amazing Flyin’ Hammer Bro from Super Mario World and the final has the Hammer Bro in green skin and a purple shell and helmet, referencing the Yo Bro from Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga.
For his stage intro, he appears out of a Baddie Box from Super Mario 3D Land. For taunts, his first has him stretch for a bit and his second has him rotate his arm, these are both idle animations in Super Mario Party and his final has him slightly hop in place then throw his hammer in the air then catch it, slightly referencing the movement in Super Mario Odyssey, and there’s a rare chance that the Hammer Bro may throw a coin instead of a Hammer, referencing the Gold Bro’s ability to throwing coins.
And finally, for victory animations, his first has him brandish his hammer, throw it in the air then pose, his victory animation in Mario Party 8; his second has him sliding on his back spin in place then pose while giving an L sign, referencing the victory animation in Mario Strikers Charged Football and his final has him spin in place then poses as he points at the camera with Boom Boom and Pom Pom also joining in on the pose, referencing the Home-run animation in Mario Super Sluggers.
And that is what the Hammer Bro is capable of in Project AT. So for this next fighter, it might end up being uploaded a little earlier or later than usual as while I have the model, I don't have the facial expressions, so you may need to bare with me on this one. Anywho, if you have any questions on the moveset, leave them down below, and if you want to see more, then follow on me Reddit and Deviantart. I'll see you next time for the next fighter.
