I am enjoying these little excursions into the world photo montage. Here is another favorite. It comes from the serial Batman And Robin from 1949. This was the second Batman serial with the first one coming around 1945 and they battle Japanese Saboteurs. In this one they're back to good old American crooks. Jane Adams plays Vicky Vale and is looking for her brother Jimmy who got mixed up with the bad guys some how. Of course she gets captured by the bad guys which is, of course good for those of us who love women in peril. They decide to take her out on a boat and once they get on the dock her gag comes off and she screams. By the time they get it back on her she has been heard on a nearby street by the Caped Crusader who you can just make out back behind some boxes in the distance after they have her gag back in place.
When I first saw this scene in the 90s (which my ex-wife had taped for me off of AMC on VHS) I loved it. Actually I still love it, but in going through it for screen captures recently I discovered that like other parts of the serial it suffers from the time factor.
In chapter one of the first serial Batman and Robin are fighting the bad guys when Batman's cape keeps getting in his way and eventually falls right off, and then magically is back up on his shoulders, but this time it's obvious that they cut, put his cape back up and then pinned it together in the back (which I'm sure that they did with Adam West's cape later on in the 60s).
This serial too has it's moments of poor production. And you'll see what I mean in the next installment.
