Firstly, the detail is fantastic. His head is so clear, it's incredible.
Nature shots are more difficult to master because for the large part you have no control of the shot (as far as positioning or objects in the background). I'm referring mostly to that bright yellow blob under his... legs?
The crop is good, although I think it's a little too centered (you have a tendency to do that ).
A larger DoF would have done an incredible job here, although I like the black background. It's simple and really amplifies the mood.
Good work, all around

Thanks. Larger DoF would've been impossible, if you look at the EXIF I was already down to f16, which is where diffraction starts to happen on digital sensors (I also would've lost critical shutter speed, lol). I agree with the centering issue, but let it be known that at the range I was shooting, I had a hard time getting those antennae in the shot... Praying Mantis' are tough bugs to shoot! lol

Thanks May!

Hahaha, yeah I understand, I didn't look at the EXIF (d'oh! ). Like I said though, it's a wonderful image and I completely understand the restrictions

Also, as far as the "center" issue goes... the in-focus area (the mantis head) is on the third, and the body is aligned diagonally towards the opposite third. Again, I don't know what you mean by centered...

They grow to be about 6-8" long around here, good like finding one big enough! lol

Superb image. Beautiful colours complemented by the black background and your use of depth of field (not to mention just getting the image at all!)....
