It's funny: before the 19th century the vampire was mostly portrayed like Orlock here, as a hunched-over little rat-man thing. Then Bram Stoker got published, and the rest is history.

I guess people were too afraid to mess with the paranormal, disgusting beasts that feed on blood etc. but after science took over and nobody felt threatened by them in modern societies, they began to romanticise these creatures. Nothindg sells better than horror anyway!
