Hahaha!  Maybe that's why Fantasio looks angry.

Heh. Too bad this duo wasnt as popular as Tintin. Their stories are cool. My favorites are still the old ones by Franquin, tho.

franquin is my fave artist/writer of the series, and it;s neat to see how his styles changes over the years up until he's sick of s&f and moved on to gaston and marsupilami.

His stories are funny (although lacking in complexity) and entertaining, and his art is the best i think

Yeah. I remember his older books, which were more toony and wacky. At first I thought it was Jideheim who made S&F look good, but apparently I got it mixed up.

I like Gaston too, and still regret not collecting the MnC editions when I had the chance...

jidehem is awesome at drawing bgs + autos though, but yeah they got mixed up cause they work together many times + half of gaston the la gaffe. Gaston is HILARIOUS, im sad I didnt collect them at all. I have the french e-books though

the more modern spirou (after franquin) tend to be kind of meh, but Tome and Janry duo (with janry as the artist specifically) is pretty good, story and artwise. In here, spirou seem to be in his twenties and Fantasio is in late 20s/early 30s
[link] .. but they did create some questionable stories like : [link] hahah....

One of the stand alone comic I really like from spirou series is called Le tombeau des champignac, by Tarrin and Yann. It's a bit different from the original but the art is pretty delicious and the story kinda touches upon things like ... seccotine is questioning spirou's sexuality/devotion to fantasio which made me went >_>; but turns out spirou is just awkward around girls/likes her but thinks fantasio is his best life pal. here's samples. [link] [link] [link] [link]

There's also an alternate universe story of Spirou and Fantasio, set in WW2 era which touches upon the subject of his origin. In this story, he's originally an orphan called Jean-Baptiste with his best friend Rene a mischievous kid.. they were pranking, a priest tried to abuse Jean (spirou) rene saved him but in process killed the priest. Then Jean was forced to work in a hotel (rene gave spip to him, which was called spirou at the time ) and Jean called himself Spirou since then. Here's some scans for you to read and the summary : [link]

The story from volume 50 left a bad taste in my mouth :/ they're trying to bring old youthful spirou back but the way they do it is so ... dumb and purely just bad writing(time travel, dream machine, somehow spirou went off to marry miss flanner from the past thus skewing the future, and fantasio mistakenly brought back younger spirou from one of the pasts etc) that I sort of just wish vol 50 just disappear or just never happened haha. OH WELL. writers can be weird. Vol 51 is promising though but fantasio is SO BALD HAHAHAHA

yeah, they print like 1 volume a year, and now it has been running for 65 years. (51 vols + extra stand alones) hopefully I can try to continue to collect them all in physical forms

Coolness! Thanks for the link! I think I saw a WWII era S&F story (the cover sort of had a Nazi banner on it, I think), but only vaguely. Better look up in the dvd collection.

My favorite char in S&F was Zorglub, actually. Was thrilled to see him in #50, no matter how weird the story went, lol...
