I'm thinking of doing it again in a larger size.

TLTaylor In reply to jjackm [2013-07-03 17:31:33 +0000 UTC]

I am curious as to why you would paint it on a larger format. Is it just to see how it would look done larger or do you see an area or aspect of the piece that would be better worked on a larger scale? What ever the reason I would love to see the result but as it stands now I can't see how this piece could be improved upon. My apologies if I ramble on to much.

this painting is 12x12 or smaller and it is such a nice composition, it might be nice in a larger format.

You are certainly right about the composition, it is wonderful. Can't wait to see it in progress. Have you decided on the size? Let me know when you decide.

That's a lot of realestate to cover. Can't wait to see the progress.

in some ways, stylewise and colour, your work reminds me of the Russian painter Chaim Soutine
Your brushwork is more controlled. This is a compliment! Jack Rob

Amazing dress! I like that the pose is upside down and the composition, her left partially obscured hand adds tension to the painting, which is more fortified by her curious sight.

Also the bed pattern is cute

This one is really good: the pose is very difficult because of perspective and the work on fabric is so good either. You are also good at picking the skin tones, but your style may gain to be less impressionist and to blend more each stroke in order to get something smoother... I have no problem with impressionism (as a French I am I just love it) but my guess is that your painting just might improve if blending more when youΒ΄re working on skin, let allow you to to work rough on other part of the painting to let it flow fresh. You just like to work on female figure, so I guess that the contrast softness of the skin and impressionist touch elsewhere could be very interesting. We share a fancy for oil: have you try to work with varnishes and with the old technique, adding thin and transparent layers, in order to get transparency on skin...?

Thanks, youΒ΄re welcome. ItΒ΄s been a lot of years painting now. I am professional I know what IΒ΄m talking about. Most people paint with oil as it were gouache. But oil isnΒ΄t gouache. Oil allows you to work it for o a long time cos itΒ΄s long to dry though this is only one of its properties. Oil is the ultimate technique, and the "glacis" technique as we know it in France, that is, the add of several thin and transparent layers of oil to build in a painting allows to create fine artwork as in the old time. That were impressionist that start to use oil like gouache. They were very criticized for that, because the way they paint, from life, in a rush, directly by small strokes and never think it again. It was a painting that was close to study rather than traditional painting. Thus, with time, we have forget the real use of oil as it was used before impressionist who only use it a basic and one layer level, just as if it were gouache. The aim of the impressionist was to work from life on a rush, no to create elaborate painting just as Vermeer or Velazquez. They act more like Rembrandt, putting stuff into knife or brush and painting directly. As I said, I donΒ΄t have a thing against impressionism, it is just that I paint the odd ways though IΒ΄d mastered the impressionist technique which is far less elaborate. ItΒ΄s a different way of painting. Though, I paint on my own, using old and new techniques.
