ashame, because growing up with the GBA, it would have been an EXCELLENT way to introduce younger gamers to a possibly more accessible version of the C64 classic...

Oh yes. If it only was playable. Sometimes pixelart breaks my heart because I realize that there are so much great visual content and neat ideas that will never be fully realized as a game because everything has to be 3D nowadays.
