Description There are Brown Hawks around here menacing (and sometimes killing) birds, squirrels, chipmunks and other small animals. I have hung DVDs at tree branches and on tall flowers to keep them away. I think it is working.

Interesting - I take a slightly different outlook - natural predators are welcome in my yard (hey, they've got to eat, too), but domestic pets are NOT welcome in my yard (as they have a food source, so eating birds is just a nasty habit to them).
I think that all points of view are welcome, just have a reason for your opinion.

As our summer cottage is in the middle of the woods, predators are not lacking of food at all, they have a whole forest just for them.
But in my yard, I feed not only birds but also Reddish-brown squirrels - quite small - and chipmunks, even smaller. I love these small animals.
Thank you very much for giving your opinion as well.

Opinions are like smiles, free to give and receive. I have no issue with protecting your friends, everyone deserves a safe place to eat. Doing what you feel is right is the most important. You go girl! Have a great one! Rob the Swash

Very interesting! In the UK the highly protected and hence very common Sparrowhawk kills vast numbers of birds. If you take their estimated population and the number of birds each one needs, you thank God that we have many migrant birds to maintain some semblance of a balanced system! The domestic cats are reputed to take a good number too, but they do not have quite the same aerial capabilities of the Sparrowhawk! Biodiversity is so important, I think. Might be worth trying this!

It is working. Our summer countryside cottage is in the middle of the woods and there are mainly many Brown haws (the female is huge, twice the size of the male).
There are other predators too so I put old DVDs everywhere I am able to. Since then, we have many song birds and much more chipmunks and Reddish-brown squirrels (at least half the size of your grey squirrels).
The daylight and sun rays reflected on the DVDs distract the acute view of the hawks and other predators. I have seen it quite a few times.
Thank you very much for your comment!

I have heard before that hawks are afraid of nothing except white spheres, or apparently even circles. Isn't that weird?

More, when the sun is reflecting on those dvds, it is completely disturbing their vision... I know it, a brown hawl landed very close to me, barely 3 feet, and he was looking very confused.

I saw a goshawk catching a pigeon from my window last year. He was looking mighty proud [link] . Brown hawks are called harriers in the UK and "kiekendief" here in NL. The latter seems appropriate as it means "chick catcher". I've seen them in the wild and unlike most other birds of prey they are indeed quite unafraid of humans. Still, 3 feet has to be exceptional!

Really effective, I saw a brown hawk landing very close to me and it seemed to be all mixed up. It ran away and I never saw it again. Before it was prowling in my back yard all the time.
Thank you very much, I appreciate it!

There was a Brown Hawk chasing birds and small animals in the yard and once, he landed down about six feet close to my chair. I never saw him after.

I try to distort their vision which is very acute. It seems to work for now, I have seen the hawk only once since then and it was looking disoriented.
