Description This is my submission for 's challenge for any and all dA artists, Project Disability. 1pen.deviantart.com/ The idea is to experience what injured and disabled artists go through as they continue to create, despite the handicaps they face.
I played it safe with the subject, a simple form. Drawn and colored entirely with my 'wrong' hand in pencil, ink and Copic markers. Erasing was really difficult, and I could NOT move the Copics freely at all. But after a bit, a funny thing happened - I just became involved with the process as if I was using my good hand. Making something I liked became more dominant than my self - imposed 'handicap'.
This has been a great experience, and you should try it.
Featured here, thanks! Birthday Feature for 12-8-13Happy Birthday to these artists!!!:

Oh, give it a try, you'll be surprised how your brain kind of takes over, and it doesn't feel awkward, just different.

So please tell me whether or not it is your sole purpose to make me nearly every piece of work you do? Quit being so fantastic... seriously. Your artwork is always a welcome and brilliant sight, especially for the causes you have taken up. A beautiful spirit behind the beautiful creations.

This really turned out great! Much better than I could even do with my RIGHT hand

What a cool project... I think I may have to try it. Not sure how to do that with clay though!

joeyv7 In reply to jadedlady [2009-01-12 17:38:22 +0000 UTC]

Clay would be a challenge, but it'd be cool to have a sculpture in there, and your creative side would probably override the handicap just like it did mine It's cool to have that experience, as it was totally a new feeling for me

Wonderful concept and exercise for creativity. I do the ambidextrous exercise a lot to help with creativity. I will have to check out the link here.

Nice work Cathy!

I don't think they set one . . . they extended the first one because of so many contributions.

Thanks, Em - what's cool about this is the 'creative' part of my brain took over, and overrode the awkwardness of my left hand. I didn't expect that at all. And it taught me that bolder/direct forms would be an improvement to my regular work

No seriously - it taught me to use more direct/bolder lines. If I can remember to do it

Oh, you DID it! I'm really mooved by your art. I have to read the project rooles again and to submit my art as well. Thank you
And the drawing is vibrant, with great colours and really beautiful.

joeyv7 In reply to Allada [2009-01-10 20:08:05 +0000 UTC]

Oh, thanks my friend! Very very simple - draw/create with your wrong hand. Or your mouth. Or your foot, in an effort to experience what disabled and injured artists go through. That's all you have to do.

RosesAndThorns [2009-01-10 18:46:27 +0000 UTC]

Gorgeous! I love the sheer "rough immediacy" of it. Very vibrant! I can't believe you did this using your "wrong" hand!

joeyv7 In reply to RosesAndThorns [2009-01-10 20:06:37 +0000 UTC]

You gotta submit one, Jodie, it's a great experience. It may have improved art from my 'correct' hand, if I can hang on to some lessons I learned here . . .

Expell-HUN [2009-01-10 15:39:35 +0000 UTC]

I would have not guessed you have used your left hand! I am really jealous, because my submission is full of "lost" lines, I could not command my left hand as I wanted I found the project because of your recommendation, thank you for it! it was really so much fun!

Oh. Yeah, I'm casting about for ideas too. Meantime that disability experiment was fun. But nothing's coming . . . . it's not much fun, is it?

Birgit-Zartl-Art In reply to joeyv7 [2009-01-11 08:26:18 +0000 UTC]

no fun at all...it gets me depressed and I miss painting
but I feel so empty and uninspired...every time I try I discard it after a while....
I really hope we will overcome these blocks

This is really great work. If you didn't write it I wouldn't even realize you did it with your left hand.
The contest is very interesting. I was thinking about it some days ago and I'll maybe give it a try...

joeyv7 In reply to Stardust-Splendor [2009-01-10 16:57:55 +0000 UTC]

YOu should - it was an interesting experience. I was forced to work with crude, bolder lines & came up with a more expressionistic work

woah.. that's beautiful! those colours, the shapes.. great! Somehow I think using your non-dominant hand adds some strength instead of taking it away

which does obviously nót mean that the paintings with your dominant hand are less beautiful than this one...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

joeyv7 In reply to JakobaHavinga [2009-01-10 17:01:46 +0000 UTC]

I hear you - I really liked that side of the exersize . . . exercize . . . I can't spell that word. But I was forced to work with less fine detail, so I had to accept a bolder line, and build from that. You should try it, it's really fun And it taught me that perhaps I should lose some fussiness in my work.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JakobaHavinga In reply to joeyv7 [2009-01-10 18:44:25 +0000 UTC]

well.. that sure looks like it's a lesson that's maybe hard but a good one I think I might try the same, indeed. This is quite making me enthusiastic!

Did I ever mention that you have a very good eye for (combining) colors?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

joeyv7 In reply to JakobaHavinga [2009-01-10 21:20:20 +0000 UTC]

XD thanks . . . this one was pretty dicey for awhile there - I had to quit because a few more lines, and it would have been MUD.

JakobaHavinga In reply to joeyv7 [2009-01-11 11:51:45 +0000 UTC]

Heheh.. yeah, that happens often. And then my teachers say: you just paint. Go on, paint. The worst thing that can happen is: you used another sheet of paper.

Teachers..
