Description I was lucky enough to be one of the guys they talked to about designing the new G.I. JOE show that is currently airing. I also didn't get that gig. Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. Oh, well.

They chose Clem and I think it was absolutely the right move. Clem did an awesome job as lead concept and my friend Steve Jones ( aka Jones-z-kitty ) did a fantastic job supervising the character department. Not an easy position, by the way.

But here is one of my unused ideas for a Cobra Guard.

Already an improvement on GI Joe Renegades, this design says "we mean business", love it!!!

In my opinion this is a VERY bad-ass design for a Cobra trooper. I love the Nazi style long coat. Never seen that done on these characters before.

I liked the idea also, but I think it was too much for a kids cartoon.

Wow , too bad ! Too much "gestapo" for kids , maybe ?! That works for me , after all they're supposed to be the villains, aren't they ? And that's a cool design ... too bad , really ... Can't wait to see the new model pack ...

I was trying for a scary secret police and I think I did go a little to far for a kids show. Oh, well, live and learn.

The question is : for who ,exactly , we're making cartoons today ? For kids , parents ,or for adult geeks ? A good question to debate but i'm afraid that producers and channels will answer the same way ...

I think it depends on the cartoon and the producers and the toy companies. Sadly, no cartoon is made without the potential profits from the toy sales factored in. Cartoons are just way too expensive to make without the extra revenue so the age group of the toys is always a serious consideration. Which can make designing a show tricky.

Thanks Dan. I have tons to learn about color but at least I'm learning how to use the gradient tool.

I've been studying this for a while. [link] Each day more and more of it sinks in. I think Loomis is more on the money with only 8 values as opposed to Munsell's 11. Howard Pyle only used 4! Maybe I can graduate to 6 or something...

Give it a read.
