As a follow up John. I was recently on a visit to Norfolk Virgina and went on board the sister ship: USS Wisconsin. Whoa! That was a wonderful experience. I have picture I took that was inspired by my memory of this drawing.

Aren't they something. I had the pleasure to be on the Missouri twice when it used to be at Bremerton Navel base and it was birthed next to some out of commission American Aircraft Carriers. The Carriers were so high in the air with their flight deck and the Battleships were so low and sleek.Β
On a trip with my family when my son's were younger we stopped in Mobile Bay in Alabama and went on the South Dakota class USS Alabama. Not quite as big as the Iowas but still big. They had areas on the ship that you could go to and many areas where they didn't want you to go. I went to the aft 16 inch gun turret and the doors were locked but there was just enough room to squeeze between the Β bottom of the turret and the deck. Once inside I was able to turn on my cell phone and find my way around. I was kind of a bad example to my children , saying the rules don't apply to me. No one knew what had happened but my boys. "Mom, Dad went into the gun turret". She was mad and never liked anything I did. She has for quite a while now been the former Mrs. Wick. I am currently happily married to a Wonderfull gal from New ZealandΒ . She is very pretty and actually modeled for one of my drawings. "Josephine". But that is our secret.

Belated congrats on this John. When I served as a Royal Navy Sea King pilot, I had the pleasure of visiting this giant on a NATO exercise in the Gulf. A fantastic pleasure and I'm so glad I had the opportunity while she was still serving. You have captured the feel of the ship perfectly.

Wow David. A Sea King pilot.
I was never on the Wisconsin but I did have the pleasure to see the USS Missouri ( The most famous of the Iowa's) twice. For many years the Missouri was stationed at Bremerton, which is a major US Navy base in the Puget Sound near Seattle, Washington, where I am from.
It is amazing the amount of work the Royal Navy and the US Navy did between the wars to see what was important in Battleship design. The British towed back to port all of the ships they could after the Battle of Jutland and captured German ships and in the 20's and 30's studied the what and why of everything. With the British doing the work and with the US paying a lot of the bills this information was shared and used. The ships that benefited were the King George IV class and the fast battleships classes, North Carolina (2ships) the South Dakota Class( 4 ships) and the Iowa's (4 ships).
These are beautiful ships. I might do another drawing of one of these ships firing a broadside that would have some interesting contrasting colors.
John
