Description "For whether we are white or copper skinned
We need to sing with all the voices of the mountains
We need to paint with all the colors of the wind.

You can own the Earth and still
All you'll own is Earth until
You can paint with all the colors of the wind."

This is actually the first time I am trying to paint in a more manga-ish style! ^^ It was really much fun! I was kinda inspired by the art of *sakimichan , who is one of my fav artists! I hope you all like it! I know that my depiction of her might differ from the Disney original version, but I like to interprete characters the way I see them!

Favs and comments/critiques are highly appreciated!

Thank you for everything!

When I saw this sitting in my inbox, I just sat and drooled for about three minutes. The colours are just so beautiful and the technique is simply amazing.

I think your Pocahontas is even better than Disney's. She looks like a real person, not just some kids' cartoon. The detail on her hair in so gorgeous. Her expression is so sad; it adds great dimension to the portrait.

I absolutely adore the background of this portrait. It is subtle enough that it doesn't take away from Pocahontas, and that is really important. I like the splash of light and the bright green hummingbird on the top right. I like the bond you made between Pocahontas and the hummingbird, it shows how tuned to Mother Nature she is that it doesn't fly away from her.

The last thing I have to add is her eyes -- they are incredible. They were the first thing I saw when I looked at this picture. The second thing I saw was the gem on her necklace. The bright shines and depth in both are terrific. I'm actually beginning to run out of words to describe how beautiful this is (which is odd, because I am usually a very wordy person e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)"/> ). You have such amazing talent!! I look forward to seeing every work you do!

The whole picture is very beautiful at first sight, the shading and the lightning is very well-done.
But there are some things that i want to point out.
If you look at the arm, it looks like a doll's arm, what i mean is..... Is she touching her hair, or has she just raised her arm?
I don't know if you understand what i'm saying.
Next is the white hairy thing around her breast and shoulders.
I can't discern if it is hair or some other material, i think you should have made it look like cutted cloth.
And the last one is her breast. It is not in the right position, it should have been lower.
The color and everything else is great. Good job!

Love the eyes, as always, but I don't feel that much proportion as in other works, Not of your bests, nor of your worsts, though. I can't see the deepness of it, and the lights on the breasts are no good. Except for that, awesome work, as you use to.

If you get out the ear it would be a lot better, I think it doesn't fit the picture.

I completely love the background and the bird.

About the dress, I would add some texture or something like you did to the chinese girl in you "Tutorial for PC Drawing".

Congrats!

First, it looks pretty good, especially the colors.
Before I read the description, I could see that this was ispired by sakimichan, because the background colors, and the smooth, shiny skin reminded me of her style e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

I think there is nothing wrong with trying new styles and stuff, but I do agree that some parts look a bit off, especially proportions of the face, and also the hand which looks flat.
Her expression looks a bit off, too. I think it's because the lack of small wrinkles between the eyebrows that makes it look as if she isn't actually making a sad face, just having "sad eyebrows" drawn on her forehead.
To be honest, the anatomy is not as good as on your previous artworks, but I wouldn't say it's bad. I think it's just because you didn't use reference for this one, am I right? I think you should practice anatomy and drawing without reference more, because you could create more awesome artworks this way e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

Also, I think Pocahontas wasn't the right one to try this new style on. These features, for example the thin nose, can't really be found on Native American people. Of course it's art, so some liberties can be taken, and I'm pretty sure there was no racism and/or "whitewashing" intended. But it is true that it's always good to try drawing different body types and features, instead of trying to apply the same face for every artwork, because it won't always work.

Overall, this is a very good artwork. It could be improved, but I guess it's true for every art e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)"/> It's a nice start for trying a new style.

I like the Idea of the piece, It's very beautiful and I don't think it's 'Wrong' I won't tell you you're racist. (because you are clearly not) But I think there should be more of a realistic look about her. She looks like a white woman. Which isn't bad, but it's just different than she would've looked like. Also I think one of the reasons this piece is being hated on is because once people build up a image in their mind of a character, they don't like to see other's opinion. Everyone interprets characters differently. For example: [link]

This was the English's interpretation of Pocahontas, because they wanted her to be the same as them, so that's how they portrayed her. I think everyone is reading too much into this. I think it's a nice picture, weather it is perfectly realistic or not. ^_^

You did a wonderful job, as always, on this piece of art. I shall forever remain a fan of yours. Once again, wonderful job! I especially love the flower in her hair. The necklace is just how the original Pocahontas in the Disney version looked like. Same for the tattoo on her left arm, it just fits perfectly! The hummingbird is a must have in the picture, and you included it. Maybe next time, you could make the shade of the hair a little (and I do mean a little) darker, and I am not trying to insult you in any way about that.

This is beautiful. The your technique is amazing. I love the colors you used in the background, It makes pocahonts stand out. The only thing that I disliked is how she looks more white than 'copper' and her face shape makes her seem less native american, But those are small details that don't matter that much. The light shimmering off her skin is amazing, and is very well done. I've seen many attempts at drawing pocahontas, but this is one of the most stunning. The soft coloring also made it more prettier. Words really can't describe how awesome this is. Keep up the good work!

This interpretation is very pretty ^^ you did a great job on her face and hair. Her skin appears to me to be too light to be Native American and it looks very caucasian even with how you have the lighting. I am far from an expert on anatomy but her arm in this picture seems a bit long. In the position that her arm is her hand would not be able to reach that far. With how she is positioned here her hand would be right in front of her right breast. Her bicep and elbow would have to be moving inward towards her body more I think. Also there should be more of a crease where her forearm goes into the bicep because her arm is bent and the muscles are folding together.

The line defining her breasts seems a bit strange but that may just be me.

I hope this was helpful and if I'm wrong in my interpretation I apologize, (which it's possible I am) these were just some things that I noticed that seemed off. Still, lovely piece and wonderful use of lighting.

Thank you for depicting her with dark brown wavy hair instead of stark black straight hair. The wavy is better suited to the region and tribe she would have been a part of (our tribes share Iroquois language roots). The stark black hair is more typical of the southwest tribes.

This looks very good! I love the colouring as usual, the only thing I would suggest would be changing her facial structure a bit- she looks more like a westerner, and doesn't resemble Pocahontas.

You know, I wonder why Disney doesn't use Pocahontas much. I see so much of Cinderella, Ariel, and Jasmine, but no Megara, Pocahontas, or Mulan. Dunno why.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FirstDarkAngel2001 In reply to UseTheBrakes [2013-09-13 16:38:30 +0000 UTC]

unfortunately, Meg and Mulan aren't considered as princesses based on their storylines, which bites a big one in it's own right. They're also starting to use Tiana a little more too, which is really a bug. The only time they have Mulan and Pocahontas are really in just the collection dolls. I barely see a hair of Meg anymore, too. Alice actually got more face time with things than her, and it was never actually stated of if she was a princess[other than in Kingdom Hearts, in which case every world had to have it's own princess], or just a noblewoman.

Yeah, it's unfortunate that they get cast to the side. Β Even amongst Nintendo ladies, no one knows who Rosalina is. Β It's like, Daisy got kidnapped once in a game Boy game and is now merely spinoff material, but Rosalina is the central character of arguably the most important Mario game since 64, and...no one knows her.

But at least even she's more well known than Pauline. Β Poor Pauline.

yeah. Kida, after the first Atlantis movie, had only maybe one or two things, and then was forgotten about. No one even knew about her enough for the second movie to even be a bother to many of the people that had seen the original one. T^T sooo many princesses are passed up, and so when I see those that are being made known, and more so some of them being turned twisted like what jeftoon01 is doing, I naturally have to give massive props. ^^
