Sadly, I never got to see Motorhead live. Β My brother did, not too long before Lemmy passed away, and he told me that he clearly did not look well, even though he kicked ass on stage. Β Excellent work, JJ!

The man's diet was Jack Daniels, Cigarettes, and the occasional piece of meat. The fact he lived to 70 is pretty impressive.Β

The man went through about a litre of JD a day, mixed with coke. When his doctors told him to stop drinking that because of the sugar and his diabetes, he switched to vodka and orange juice. He was once told that he was ineligible for blood transfusions, because normal blood would be toxic to him, and never to even think about giving blood because his was toxic to regular people.
I only hope they evacuated before they cremated him. He must have been pickled in alcohol.
He never stopped. He never retired. He never gave up the booze and cleaned up and stopped swearing and became a family man. He never resorted to reality TV. He passed away halfway through tour commitments, because he was still rocking.
If there is an afterlife for musicians, he is rocking out, jamming with Freddy Mercury, Jimmy Hendrix, Dimebag Darrell, and Keith Moon, with David Bowie joining in when he's taking a break from writing his next rock opera.
While the world is less awesome for having lost him, the relative awesomeness of every human alive has gone up without him occupying the top of the pedestal.
And he's not dead. The 'sudden onset brain cancer' was just an explanation and a cover story. He has ascended to a higher plane of existence, to become the god of the bass and of raspy vocals.
If you learn your instrument, and you practice your songs, and you rock hard enough, you may just get to drink with him after you die.
As far as I see it, the only sadness I have of his ascension is that I never met him. I think I'd have gotten along with him.

Not a lot longer; he died of brain cancer, not a heart attack or liver failure.
Besides, a life where you have to eat kale and carrot sticks and avoid cheeseburgers is a life not worth living. I'd rather go out at 70 living the life I love than at 90 and having to have my backside wiped for me because I'm too frail to manage it.
Not, of course, that I'm likely to survive that long anyway with my hobbies.
