We had sent the drone down to try and capture it swimming on film a number of times but the Gyarados was far too deep for our little robot to go without crumpling under the ocean pressures. We had decided to send it down one last time but unfortunately we couldn’t get a visual. It was at this point that we saw the dark clouds building on the horizon.
The captain ordered us to start bunkering down the ship and to bring the drone back to base. Then one of the team called out that the Gyarados had started its ascent. Soon it was on the same level as the drone but shot past it with tremendous speed, only giving us a glimpse as it swam by.
East of our boat, we saw the tell tale fin rise high out of the water. With a powerful explosion, the Gyarados tore through the waves, launching itself high into the air and crashing back into the water like a dancing serpent. It was amazing to watch. The drone caught some incredible shots as it leapt out of the water just as a streak of lighting weaved across the sky. Thunder rolled through the clouds, only to be answered by a tremendous roar from the Gyarados.
Ancient sailors told stories of Gyarados chasing storms, a legend that turned out to be true, especially in the mating season when many Gyarados will meet and do battle for the right to breed with the strongest competitors and males would fire blinding ‘Hyper Beams’ at each other. Hyper beams are created when the Hydrogen a Gyarados stored for accelerated ascent is introduced into a natural low pressure plasma system cavities within a Gyarados body. The hydrogen atoms dissociate and ionise, changing into plasma which is then fired from a gland in the throat, creating streams of powerfully condensed energy. It’s a devastating ability, one that was almost outlawed in professional Pokemon battling. However, due to its slow recharge time, it was eventually approved and has only ever been seen a handful of times in competitive battling.
