Revolutionary Girl Utena,
this piece made me watch the anime (in order to portray the characters properly). I normally shun old shows, mainly because of the animations, but Utena completely changed my mind. One cannot fully grasp the essence of the story without decoding the various symbols in each of the 39 episodes. This anime pushes you to think outside the box and is meant for an active audience, willing to make an extra effort to understand its hidden cues instead of offering some mindless entertainment
(Which is, I dare say, quite revolutionary

Yeah, Utena is a mind-bending / thoroughly fascinating series - one that doesn't fall predictably on the standard anime tropes of that era.
