You inspire me to use DOF in my next image. Love this space scene, Ryan. Like the battles in BSG with almost no sounds and fast camera work.

Thanks! I'm kind of addicted to DOF when it comes to characters especially. I don't like the flat 2D look of my renders with a little depth of field added. I think 3D scenes beg it, and it adds a little more realism. This scene here looks a bit miniature, like little play things. The scale was hard to achieve. But thanks for the BSG nod! Those were my favorite parts of the show!

The DOF on this is wonderful! It really creates a sharp area of focus in a scene where so much else is going on. And, as always, I'm amazed by your mastery of Vue. I've barely touched Vue 10! Kind of astonishing you find time to render at all, given how much you're doing these days! I'm glad you had time -- I love seeing all the little Extrasolar pieces you toss at us!

Hey, thank you so much! I had big expectations for Vue 10, but honestly I've been a little disappointing with it, and haven't seen all the bells and whistles it was supposed to have. I hope to have more time soon to do more things. I feel so absent and disconnected from everything fun. But Ariel-x and I have been trading emails on story ideas and hopefully will be writing more, when time permits. So much to do! Thank you again for the enthusiasm!

Very cool Ryan. How do you manage to fit this in with your schedule? Is your new store open yet?

Thank you, Delia! I had to make this in stages as time permitted. Not my best work, but it satisfied the need to do a little fun artwork. Sadly, no, the store isn't open just yet. We've had some more set-backs, plus I've been a bit occupied at the day job, traveling again next week. Bummer, but we're nearly ready. Just a couple more big purchases and then the dreaded DHEC inspection, and hopefully we'll be set. It's getting exciting. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for your thoughtfulness!

I was up in Asheville a few weeks back and found the most awesome book store downtown. Have you been to Battery Park Book Exchange and Champagne Bar? Wow! I could have spent a week in there. Loved it! Malaprops is nice too, but they were closed that day. I'm glad I visited it. If I had the retail space like they have I would love to do something similar. It's like a maze of books, begging you to get lost.

Well - good luck with the inspection. Let us know when you're officially open. I never did spend a huge amount of time in Asheville - my work week was about 100 hours. Would love to check those bookstores out though - I like the name Malaprops - reminds me of high school.

Yikes, that's a crazy schedule. So you're not in Asheville any more? I'm so out of the look -- please forgive me. Definitely check them out if you can or get back there. I just love independent book stores. I'll definitely let you know when I finally have mine open.

It certainly was. I've been in CA for a while but am headed back that way soon. Being out of the loop is something I seem to spend my time doing lately - LOL.

I know I haven't been around much lately but this is clearly a snapshot from the the new CGI animated webisode, right?
That's how much I feel drawn into this! The DOF really rocks here!
Awesome job, bud!

Hey, thanks so much, Lance! No worries, I'm not around much either. And oh, don't I wish I had time to do an animated webisode! You're too kind, my friend!

In a perfect world, you'd have the staff, money and time as someone would recognize and pay for those skills! Hey, I'm just happy to see you're keeping those skills sharp! Yeah, been too busy for art this past year but hopefully, I'm getting back on track.

How cool is this! I love how the pov is zoomed in to your Harvester! hehe It really gives a great sense of depth! And it looks so cute too. Love all the Asteroids floating about. I keep finding new little gems the more I look at the image. Love how you have illuminated the scene and the composition gives a nice action feel to it as well. I sure hope the driver of the Anura ship is a skillful one. Yikes! One false move and poof, no more ship! hehe Awesome job Ryan! I'm glad to see you exercising those creative muscles again!

Thank you very much, Suzi! It was fun creating this, though it took several days since I only had snippets of time to work and tweak, and as usual, re-render about 50 times! Hopefully BjΓΆrn will create a similar scene with his Anura ships tugging an asteroid -- an idea he had when I had presented him with this one originally. Hopefully I'll have a bit more time to do some more scenes soon. It's good to get that 3d fix. I sure need it to keep me from going bonkers!

Your most welcome hon! Aww, I'm sure that is difficult just being able to steal away little bits of time to play. I'm just glad you are taking those bits and doing just that. All work and no play makes Ryan a very dull boy! Cool, I like that idea with the Anura ship! Pulling an asteroid? Wow, now that will be an interesting task. hehe I'm sure Mr. B will come up with an innovative way to make that happen. hehe Cool! I hope things can slow down a bit for you too so you can have more time to create. I would sure hate to see you pop a vein or something working too hard! boo! Be a good boy now and I hope your progress on the venture continues along smoothly! Hugs sweetie!

Thank you, Kikue! If I don't get a little artwork time here and there I might possibly go insane. This was a fun distraction from all the goings-on lately. Day job is what it is but getting a little less stressful, and the store is coming along, slowly but surely. Time management is a bitch sometimes.

So glad you got to play a little! You deserve some play time. Awesome job on your render, I would think it would be dangerous working on those mines! Potential for collision and all! And ROFL @ "Heidi Klum"

jrmalone In reply to VeeSwan [2012-03-26 14:04:52 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, Vee! Yes, what a nice treat to play, though I had to do it in little pieces as I got time. Gone are the days where I can sit for hours and play with scenes and objects. I sure miss that, but the opportunity will come around again. There's some back-story that I was thinking in my mind, scientifically if I can pull it out my butt first, where those Anura ships act as sweepers and gravitational tugs in situations where the 'roids might be rogue and possibly slam into the miners. We'll see...

And yeah, the Heidi Klum is a long-standing funny. He can mimic her "Project Runway Speech" where she says, "In the fashion industry, you're either in or you're OUT." lol

VeeSwan In reply to jrmalone [2012-03-27 19:50:18 +0000 UTC]

You're very welcome! That sounds like a fantabulous idea! Even if it does come out of your butt! LOL but yeah, that would rock! As for Bearcakes, I think I've even heard him do that mimic, it does sound really familiar. He is such a card!
