Jessica Van Hulleβs βSwitchbladesβ (digitally painted illustration) is a masterful play of several cultural icons, which lends to an instant appreciation of a cross-generation of film and animation viewers.
In the center of the work is a riveted black leather clad buxom raven-haired slyly smiling woman, who deeply mascara laden eyes remind you of such delectable personalities as Alicia Silverstone or Winona Rogers. Yet belying that alluring face, danger is represented by her dominatix-like costume and crossed mechanical arms that end with fingers of very long blades. Such a frightening and gentle combination takes back the viewer to Tim Burtonβs film βEdward Scissor Handsβ.
Yet moving further from the Tim Burton image, her mechanical arms and the rusty gears in background refer to Tetsuhiro Otomoβs animated film βSteam Boyβ, which has grown into a pseudo-retro art imagery called βSteam Punkβ.
Overall, this melding of various pop culture themes creates a magnificent work to be appreciated by sci-fi lovers of many ages.

Either Edward Scissorhands, Wolverine, or Sweeny Todd is her biological father. My bet is on Edward Scissorhands. Great work! Very nice. I'm goin' throw in Prince Nuada as a distant cousin or something. 'Cause the gears in the background remind of the scene where the prince and Hellboy fought in Bethmoora in Ireland in 'Hellboy II'.

Weeellllll, let's see...*thinking* I'm gonna say-Sarah from the movie 'Labyrinth'. 'Cause Jennifier Connelly has porcelain skin and the black hair where parts of it turn blue, like this young gal in the pic. Or, to be totally romantic saying within the E.S.'s universe, probably Kim-Edward's sweetheart. They may had a fling before he went back up to the big house on the hill to become a hermit. Than, she-the pic girl-had a major accident, and Kim went to Edward for help, so he gave their daughter scissorhands! So it would run in the family. Get it? Scissors, run?! Running with scissors! Ha ha. I couldn't help it. Anyway, now she's a super cool, goth, steampunk chik. She owns her own nightclub, where famous celebs come from all over, get into trouble. Which only brings MORE fame to her establishment. There. Now she has a biography.

I like the clockwork touch on the elbows up to the palms, first of all. Had to get that out of the way. Other than that, sweet oil painting, particularly the way the central figure is all white compared to her rusty-steamy background.
