Description The twin-boom fighter aircraft, somewhat similar to the following SM.92 reconnaissance bomber.

School's clocking down, so don't expect a surge (hopefully said surge would come back tho.)

The brainchild of Marshal Italo Balbo (who survived his shoot-down in Libya with minor injuries contrary to what happened in real life), he envisioned a fighter capable of sporting heavier armament than the standard-issue 12.7mm Breda-SAFAT heavy machine gun, while retaining the speed of the latest prototype to the roster of fighters aspiring for the Regia Aeronautica; the Macchi MC.202.

First flying in winter 1942-early 1943, after a year of development and powerplant testing, the SM.91 was to be powered by a pair of Fiat RA.1050 R.C.58 12-cylinder inline engines (essentially a licensed-produced DB-605 inline engine.) Although some were tested with Piaggio P.XII 18-cylinder radial engines, they were not used.

Armament was centered towards the nose; it was planned to have 5x 20mm MG-151/20 cannons in the nose, although they were issued to fighters instead. To compensate, they were issued 4x 20mm Breda CM20/65 cannons. Some units used the SM.91 as a reconnaissance-bomber, awing to it's high speed and (hopefully) being able to escape attacking aircraft. In the case they were intercepted, the rear gunner used a 12.7mm Breda-SAFAT heavy machine gun welded onto each other, similar to the MG-81Z that the Luftwaffe had in service.

About forty-nine SM.91s were built, with the informal name of Trasimeno, named after the titular lake located in Umbria. It entered service in July 1943; 2/3 of SM.91s built was used by the Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana, while the rest were used by the pro-allied Aviazione Cobelligerante Italiana.
