Description Decided to try a more fantasy-based watercolor. I've never really tried coloring my lineart this way, and I was curious if it would give me more freedom and range of color than markers. I would have done the background a little differently if I had it to do over again.

Love seeing your dragons in an environment! The watercolours are really nice and soft as well.

Thanks! I'm definitely planning on doing more paintings of my little creatures meandering about the world. I hope someday I'll be half as good at watercolors as you, haha! I feel like such a newb!

You should definitely do more you're so good at it already Haha I've been using watercolours for awhile and I still feel like a newb compared to what I've seen other people do with them.

Very cute
I assume he's timid because he's so high up?

Hehe, yes! And trying to cautiously go out on a narrow branch to fetch an acorn!

Cute work! Love the texture you worked out on the branch ;D The background could use a little more definition, but I think all the detail you poured into that adorable little dragon offsets it nicely. Nice job hun!

Thanks! I'm not very good at getting good textures yet but I tried my best on the branch. I definitely hope to figure out how to do better backgrounds going forward!

This looks great! I agree with *ankewehner, the color combination really makes it stand out, and I love the way the leaves turned out.

Thanks. ^__^

Good to know my paint experiments worked out pretty well in this case.

Oh, and, uh, sorry that I didn't get back to you. I've kinda been wiped out by a cold all week.

No worries, hope you're feeling better!

BTW, I picked up some Super Sculpey this week, so we'll see how the experiment goes haha...

Hehe, I hope that the super sculpey works well for you! Hope you'll post your experiments but I can also understand if you decide to wait until you've finished the bigger project. Best of luck!

And thank you, I'm feeling waaaay better. R is still sick though, poor guy. :-/

Thanks! I'm hoping to give it a try this weekend, but I just picked up a big piece of basswood, so I'm itching to get started on a carving project I have in mind first... so we'll see. I probably won't post the experiments publicly, but I'd be happy to put them someplace where you can check them out privately and offer some pointers.

Glad you're feeling better, hope R is on the mend too!

Hoo boy do I know how you feel about backgrounds. lD; Still! The picture itself came out magnificently. Our delicate little dragon just looks so exquisitely detailed, so filled with personality in his every tense little line, and the colors are just magnificently lush all around. ^3^

kaikaku In reply to Gojira007 [2012-01-13 02:08:27 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I always have issues with the background because I don't want them to compete with the foreground, but so many times the work feels incomplete without them. And, I dunno... I'm still not completely sure how to get the effects I want with watercolors, so a few things in the background came out less-than-ideal. But I was pretty happy with how the dragon and leaves came out, glad you were too.

Again, I know the feeling. Very, very much. I struggle with a similar problem with my own backgrounds, and they often wind up looking too drained and uneven for my taste as a result. =/

Your trials paid off. The dragon is truly magnificent. <3

I guess it's hard to tell, I think your backgrounds have looked great since you started using that paint! Sometimes the perspective's off in some of them, but for the most part they've been really good.

Gojira007 In reply to kaikaku [2012-01-14 23:43:24 +0000 UTC]

Well first off, thank you for the compliment.

And yes, perspective is another area I'm working to improve on. While I agree my backgrounds have improved now that I mostly use goauche for them, I also know I've got a ways to go. The obvious brush marks, the uneven colors...I need to find a way to make my backgrounds more solid and consistent, in other words, and I will keep striving to do just that; it definitely helps knowing I have the support of friends like you. ^_^
