I almost thought robins were myths before I moved out of Houston. xD (I did see one or two but it was rare.)

Oh man. Sometimes I see like 20 all at once just milling about... usually in parks though.

You probably had stuff in Houston that I wouldn't be familiar with, I've actually never been to Texas. I've been to Arizona and I think I've been to New Mexico, briefly.

Well, Houston once beat out Detroit for a top-three spot in 'most polluted American city'. I remember in my childhood there used to be fireflies there but I hadn't seen them in ages before moving. I suspect the pollution is probably one reason there aren't as many birds as there might be outside the city. Well, that and the grackle-pigeon turf wars. Houston is full of both pigeons and grackles and they're constantly vying for dominance over nesting areas and resources. Grackles have the intelligence and can be vicious (they will peck baby pigeons to death) but pigeons have sheer numbers. But between those two, I think they squeezed out some of the diversity. Saw rock doves, sparrows, starlings, and heard (but never saw) woodpeckers. Any other bird sighting was pretty rare, in my experience. Seagulls and terns could be seen when the coast was stormy and they moved further inland.

Houston is not the place you wanna go if you visit Texas. xD Go to the hill country, it's gorgeous. Wildflowers like crazy, lots of animals, endless skies. Some parts of the coast are nice, too. (Others are cesspools due to oil refineries.) If you must go to a city, hit up Austin or San Antonio, they're cleaner, prettier, and safer than Houston. Avoid Dallas at all costs, it's a fallen city like Detroit (boom-and-bust) and last I checked, it was pretty bad.

It was pretty nice. Stayed still and happy for a long while as I took pictures.

And so it does.
