Description hi there folks! welcome again in the Victorian Age Space Colonisation

this time an Austro-Hungarian space battleship "Viribus Unitis" -THe Imperial Fleet flagship (latin: With United Forces) name of the ship is also an official motto of the Habsburg monarchy... this vessel is one of the four battleships of her class (Tegetthoff-Klasse) :
SMS Prinz Eugen
SMS Szent Istvan (Hungarian:Saint Stephen)
SMS Tegetthoff
and SMS Viribus Unitis of course

the Austro Hungarian Imperial Fleet is the fifth Space fleet as regards the size...(after the Royal Navy, German Kaiserliche Marine, Franch Fleet and Russian Imperial Fleet) but still can't be a real threat to the other powers(their fleet makes up a 1/5 of the British Royal Navy)...

The beginning of the Austrian adventure with Space colonies was the "Phobos crisis" in 1886 (earlier the Empire had only few lunar bases which were also the navy space harbours ) ...The German II Reich announced that one of the Martian moons -Phobos is for sale since it doesn't present any value for the German economy... Two sides declared their interest: USA and the Austro-Hungary( the U.K was involved in colonising Mars and later in suppressing the Martian Revolt )...The Germans finally sold Phobos to their Austro-Hungarian allies in 1885...one year later a leader of the scientific expedition on Phobos - Czech Frantisek Shveyk ( ) suddenly announced that he found a tremedously big layers of tungsten ore (hidden deeply under the surface) on Phobos...

the whole Earth was shocked...at first the German Kaiser Wilhelm II wanted to get back that Martian moon, but fortunately Bismarck convinced him to call off his claims...but the USA weren't so calm...in 1886 a 10 cruisers of the US Navy were heading towards Phobos simply to conquer it since the Congress claimed that the USA were cheated by the Germans...

the Austro Hungarian response was quick, Kaiser Franz Joseph sent four Erzherzog Karl (archduke Charles) class space battleships to defend Phobos...a Fight between the K.u.K. Kriegsmarine and the U.S. Navy commenced...one of the Austrian battleships -SMS Kaiserin Elizabeth was seriously damaged while the USA lost 2 cruisers...America soon sent their own battleships -USS Virginia, USS Arizona and USS Nevada...Now the situation was very unfavourable for the Austrians...American ships had a serious advantage over them...

Fortunately for Franz Joseph, German Emperor gave full diplomatic and military support to the Austro-Hungary ..Soon the whole German Weltraumflotte (former Hochseeflotte since it served on Earth ) - the strongest German navy located on Deimos moon set off to destroy the US vessels...the situation was really hot...everybody thought that soon the War will break out...Fortunately France and the British Empire (the Martian revolt was coming to the end) also set off their fleets to stop Germany and prevent the war... the USA was forced by the U.K. to relinquish their claims (in exchange the Austro-Hungarian war reparations ) ...

is there anybody out there or are you asleep lads?

PS_PL mam nadzieje że mnie nie zabijesz Boruciu jakoś tak wyszło z tym pancernikiem

They did not take a motion picture film of the accidental sinkng of the Austrian Szent Istvan when it landed (accidentally) in one of the few still remaining Martian lakes. It was rumored that the pilot landing the craft, of Italian ancestry, may have done so intentionally.

Nice concept! But the unarmoured propulsion is a big mistake. And the engine is obstacle for the lower turret aiming. My fav parts: the two side turret, and the aft platform over the engine.

Why would a spaceship have rigging for sails, and why does it also have an anchor?

Kaiser-Conti In reply to Doomsday-Device [2007-05-07 18:25:09 +0000 UTC]

because it was cheaper to convert ordinary sea battleships than projecting and building space ships of a new type...also the action takesa place in the second half of the XIX century some victorian spirit is needed

I suppose you could just say that the masts were converted to broadcast/recieving towers. But you'd think it'd be better to reduce the profile of a warship and just remove them altogether?

Forgive me, I tend to get way too litteral and logical when it comes to sci-fi technology.

Kaiser-Conti In reply to Doomsday-Device [2007-05-07 18:48:18 +0000 UTC]

nah..there's no need to remove the masts...it's almost impossible to hit such a thin and slender object ...
and this is steampunk...there's no place for logical thinking here ...it is supposed to look good

Steam punk can be logical. All it takes is more intricate mechanics and a realization of the limits of the power source.

Very good work again, I like it very much. A very high level of details. But am I seeing it correctly, are these lifeboats under the crane? (Kinda wonder if a crane is so useful in zero- gravity... maybe some kind of claw arm would be more useful.) I wonder what the crews spaesuits look like. Anyway, keep up the good work, and yay to Venus!

BTW, "Hochseeflotte" might not be the right term for the german space navy, since it's not operating on an ocean. "Weltraumflotte" might fit better.

Kaiser-Conti In reply to Andromedos [2007-05-05 09:30:54 +0000 UTC]

good point chum! I didn't even notice it lifeboats also have turbojet engines but it's a little bit hard to see them..and the crane? let it be hydraulic

Hochseeflotte -you're absolutely right mate (I've always said that having a German friend is a gift from heaven ^^) I understand a little bit German so I know what the term Hochseeflotte does actually mean...but I was totally influenced by the WW1 history ... I'll change it then and thanks for a sincere opinion!

btw can you tell me which ship of the German Imperial Navy was it's flagship? had the Kaiserliche Marine ever had a flagship? I must find something representative for the German Fleet

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Andromedos In reply to Kaiser-Conti [2007-05-05 14:59:43 +0000 UTC]

Well... I could not find an official flagship for the entire navy, but during the battle of Jutland, the SMS Friedrich der Große was the Hochseeflotte's command and flagship, carrying Admiral Scheer and his staff. The Friedrich der Große probably would be your best candidate.

Damn... and I've already started drawing SMS Bayern

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Andromedos In reply to Kaiser-Conti [2007-05-06 01:19:37 +0000 UTC]

Well, since it's an alternative timeline, a SMS Bayern could very well be the flagship. Even though personally, as a Rhinelander I gnash my teeth that the flagship is named after these southern Weisswurst- munching hillbillies.
Speaking of Bavaria, I recently saw a documentary about Ludwig II fo Bavaria. Seems like his majesty not only build romantic castles, but also was a fan of high technology. He planned some pretty steampunk- esque projekts, Including a steam powered airship. Quite interesting.

so you probably like the song "Die Wacht am Rhein" huh?
I must say that Ludwig had pretty wicked ideas...this zeppelin-like airship looks awesome ..

Andromedos In reply to Kaiser-Conti [2007-05-07 16:28:25 +0000 UTC]

As a matter of fact, I do, but only in the right atmosphere. For example when playing Hearts of Iron II.

The best thing about Ludwig's airship is that it would actually worked. Engineers rebuild it in a computer program, and it flew like a bird.
The pictures of steampunk- Munich were great, too.

ahh.. good old HoI2 Paradox games are wonderful ...

Koeniggratzer Marsch is also awesome for me..I also like to listen to the old Imperial anthem "Heil dir im Siegerkranz" :3 (the melody is the same as God save the Queen but it doesn't matter... )

and about the airship. I'll try to do one as a German strategic space bomber

An interesting clash between the old and the new. Very nice job. Still, nothing can compare to Her Majesty's Royal Navy XD. So, you are trying to recreate the victorian times in a space age? Wait wait, in 1886, the Austrian empire had not changed it's name to Austria Hungery yet. Am I right? I know quite a bit about the German Unification, though not to keen on dates. IB can fill one's head. Just so you know, if you wanted to threaten Great Britain, 1886 would be the time to do it, they where too busy in Africa at the time XD.

Kaiser-Conti In reply to Radavik [2007-05-03 16:43:18 +0000 UTC]

well...Austro-Hungary came into being in 1867
my universum is a completely alternative reality where in the second half of the XIX century as a reslult of an incredible scientific and technological development the European powers (with guest appearance of the USA ) after colonizing Africa, Asia and America set off on Mars and other planets of the Solar system (Now I'm thinking about colonizing Venus ) ^^ ...here Britannia apart from ruling the waves is ruling the space XD
