Description Focke Wulf Fw 190A-4 of IV/JG1 as flown by Oberleutnant Günther Witt, based at Münchengladbach, October 1942.

Almost as soon as the Messerschmitt Bf 109 entered service, the RLM tendered a contest for a future fighter design, worried that the Bf 109 might be outclassed by future foreign designs.  Among the designs sent in was one by Kurt Tank of Focke Wulf, who had previously designed and unsuccesfully submitted the Fw 159 as a competitor for the Bf 109.

Unlike rival designs of the Bf 109 - the Heinkel He 100 and Focke Wulf Fw 187 - the new design submitted by Kurt Tank did not use the Daimler-Benz DB601 engine, which was already in short supply due to the requirements on the German aviation industry put down by Bf 109 and Bf 110 production.  Instead, it was designed around the BMW 139 radial engine.  Kurt Tank's design philosophy on the Fw 190 was that, rather than a pure-breed "race horse" like the Bf 109, his Fw 190 should be a "workhorse", rugged enough to cope with conditions in combat, yet easy enough to maintain.  Problems with the BMW 139 engine led to its eventual replacement by the BMW 801 radial engine, and after a number of different prototypes had been built, production started with the Fw 190A-0, a pre-production version which was armed with 6 MG 17 7.92-mm machine guns (28 built).  These were followed by a batch of 102 Fw 190A-1 fighters, which saw the outer wing-mounted pair of machine guns replaced by 20-mm MG FF/M cannons following criticism by pilots during operational trials.

The Fw 190A-2 featured a new BMW 801C-2 engine, as well as revisions to the exhausts and cooling system to resolve a number of severe engine cooling problems which had plagued the earlier versions, resulting in numerous threats for the troubled Fw 190 program to be terminated by the RLM.  Another modification to the Fw 190A-2 variant saw the wing-mounted armament change from a pair of MG 17 machine guns and a pair of MG FF/M cannons to two pairs of 20-mm cannons.

The subsequent Fw 190A-3 variant saw the BMW 801C-2 engine replaced by a more powerful BMW 801D-2, which required a higher octane fuel.  The A-3 was the first Fw 190 variant capable of conversion into a fighter-bomber; in all, some 910 Fw 190A-2s and A-3s were built.

The Fw 190A-4 variant retained the A-3's engine and armament, but featured a new water/methanol engine boost system, and improved radio equipment with a stub aerial mounted on the tail, visually differing from the earlier variants' tail-mounted antenna anchor point. The A-4 variant also saw the introduction of factory-installed conversion sets (Umrüst-Bausätze), rather than the field conversion kits (Rüstsatz) used on earlier versions.  In all, 976 Fw 190A-4s were built before production switched to the Fw 190A-5, a new variant with a longer fuselage.

----------

Oberleutnant Günter Witt was a two-kill pilot of the German Luftwaffe; he was credited with a kill over a French Air Force Curtiss Hawk-75A south of Reims, on 9 June, 1940, and a second kill over a Supermarine Spitfire I near London on October 20th 1940.  He started out his war flying Messerschmitt Bf 109E's with 5/JG 52 before converting to the Focke Wulf Fw 190A, flying the type with IV/JG 1 and 10/JG 11, before converting to the Messerschmitt Bf 109G which he flew with 7/JG 1.

Oblt. Günther Witt was shot down over Marbehan, Belgium on February 8th 1944, bailing out of his stricken Messerschmitt (Wknr. 15406 'Weisse 2'), but unfortunately succumbing to his injuries later that same day at the St Elisabeth hospital in Luxembourg.

Hey man! I’m new to this app. I saw your post on the Japanese Zero and I must say it’s just phenomenal!
I have a few questions about how to stay in touch with you.
Thank you!

Ironically, he may have been lucky to have been shot down at such an early stage of the War - by mid-1943, the advent of bomber formations had led designers to seriously start upgunning Luftwaffe fighters.  Mid-1943 saw the introduction of the Werfer-Granate 21 (one single hit of one of those babies was enough to literally obliterate a B-17); autumn 1943 saw the MK 108 enter service (30-mm cannon, with a 3/4 lbs explosive shell); one hit of those in the nose compartiment, and I don't think your grandfather would have been there to tell the tale... :/

My fave fighter of ww2 and as I call it: the spitfire killer But in most games it isnt as deadly as one can read in books and documentaries....
Good work on it but the decals is a bit shiny but could be due to the camera and light, since its zvesda model: how is the quality on it, as good as the revell/airfix later models or better?

The Zvezda model is slightly more basic than the Revell one (no rivet detail, only panel lines), but it is surprisingly well engineered.  It is of their 'snap and build' series, which means it can be assembled without using glue.  Sadly, the model is let down a bit by the quality of the decals; also, the swastika on the tail is based on the incorrect dimensions of a captured example that was flown in the US, rather than the actual marking as applied in service by the Luftwaffe.

Currently, my grading in terms of models is the following:

- Never built, so no grading:
Hasegawa series of Fw 190 (4 star?)
Heller series of Fw 190 (2 star?)
2013 Airfix Fw 190A-8/F-8 (4 star?)
Academy series of Fw 190 (3 or 4 star?)
Admiral series of Fw 190 (3 star?)
Tamiya Fw 190A-3 (4 star?)

- 5 stars
Eduard series of Fw 190 (various kits, A-5 to A-8 and F-8) (Weekend Edition & Profipack)
Dragon Ta-152H

- 4 stars
Revell Fw 190A-8/F-8 (1998 mould) - minus 1 star for moulding flaws of later editions
Academy Fw 190D-9 - minus 1 star for consistently poor quality of decals
Zvezda Fw 190A-4 - minus 1 star for basic detail.

- 3 stars
Sword Fw 190 - minus 2 stars for short-run quality.  Deserves 3.5 stars for portraying the rare Fw 190A-1 variant.

- 2 stars
Matchbox Fw 190A-3/A-4 - minus 3 stars for rudimentary quality.  No interior detail, crude surface detail.  Deep panel lines.  Toy-like quality.
Airfix Fw 190D-9 (1979) - minus 3 stars for rudimentary quality.  No interior detail, raised panel lines.

- 1 star
Airfix Fw 190D-9 (1958) - Only listed here for 'archeological' reasons.

- 0 star
Revell Fw 190A-3 (1960s Monogram mould) - no redeeming qualities at all.  Only resembles an Fw 190 if looked at from a distance.  Surfaces covered with rivets the scale equivalent of apples.
Revell Ta 152H (1960s Monogram mould) - no redeeming qualities at all.  Revell should be ashamed of itself to still include this particular model in their 2017 catalogue!

I have built some of them:
2013 Airfix Fw 190A-8/F-8 (4 star?) The one with the snake decals, very good model and details 4-5 stars according to me.
Tamiya FW 190 A3 the same there maybe the panel lines arent that deep but detail wise perfect 4-5 stars.

The TA 152H from revell I agree, horrible and old kit that they should have done a new mold for, but I think they know almost no other model maker have a kit of it out there.

I have to give Eduard a try then, never built theirs.

Dragon has an excellent kit for the Focke Wulf Ta 152H, but it is very expensive (I've seen it go at around €30 - and yes, it is 1/72, not 1/48 or 1/32...)

Here's an inbox review of the Eduard Fw 190A-8/R2 Weekend Edition kit:
www.modellversium.de/kit/artik…

The weekend edition kits go for about €12, they include two decal options each and have only plastic parts.  The more advanced Profipack kits cost about €20, and include additional photo-etch parts and decal options for up to four aircraft.

Lol, that reminds me of an old aviation joke:

A journalist interviews a veteran fighter pilot, who recounts his aerial battles:

And then, all of a sudden, they swept out of the sun - a formation of 20 Fokkers!

... Lest we remind our viewers: a Fokker was an aircraft type used by the Germans...

Yes, but these Fokkers flew Messerschmitts!
