Description
My friend knew the king,used to spend time talking of his dreams
of trees and beasts
and read the writing on the wall
when the party proved to be
empty trappings of empty life.
My friend knew the king,
used to spend time in his room
overlooking a courtyard
praying to a promise,
but never for the promise
to be fulfilled.
I met the king once,
and he asked me
to worship gold
instead of love.
With you by my side,
I would be thrown into the furnace,
let everything burn,
but for me and you protected
by a fireproof embrace.
I screamed at the heat,
cried out to it by name;
its name is your name,
and you descend upon me,
this burn is of the third degree
of separation from you.
It is little wonder that
idle idols are made idyll
by idle hands in places hot,
burning like my love for you,
our love for each other.
I cannot bend to a product,
even for those I know,
but I bend to its source,
lay my face in your lap,
my head on your chest;
melted gold
has nothing
on body heat.
I know the king,
for I did not burn;
with you and love
I shall forever be
faithful.

Thanks. After the thirteenth stanza of "Anselm" (shameless self-promotion: [link] ), I was really taken with the idea of playing off homophones and homonyms. "Idle idol" is something I've been throwing around in my brain for, literally, years--that inactive gods, statues of gold, stand still--but then there was "idyll"; it sort of built itself.
