Description If we were to be asked
paper or plastic
About our hearts like
Bags in a grocery store,
Would we choose the strength
Of paper that tears with
Lateral force or simple puncture
When wetted with tears
Or perchance the stretch
Of plastic that molds to
the shape of fragile eggs or
the hard edges
of milk cartons

I know not what my heart may be,
But if I could choose,
I would ask that mine be plastic,
That you could tear me apart
With all the weight of this baggage
And recycle me,
And make me into a bottle
To carry your water,
Wet your throat,
Whistle your tune
And sing your songs.

If I could choose,
I would ask that your heart
Be paper, because I am heavy
But too weak to support myself,
And I need your strength,
And I will carry you not in hand,
But in my arms,
And guard your heart from tears,
And never let your tears soak it.
