I think I remember the artist once stating that she thinks Rainbow's hair looks more natural on a human with just the red tones.

I was thinking the same thing... but then, why do the other 5 keep their hair colors?
If the idea was to look natural, they should all have hair colors that are close to their actual mane color.
Rarity - Dark brown (near-black)
Twilight - Dark brown (+ color streak)
Pinkie - Red
Fluttershy - strawberry-blonde
AJ - already blonde

I think he or she was trying to mute the colors slightly. A rainbow hairstyle probably would've been overdone on a human RD, while in the series, the sky blue goes ell with the mane because rainbows are naturally viewed against the sky. But I like your hair color choices, too.
