Description Measuring in at 17' long and 9' at the shoulder with a 40' wingspan, we have the adorable, curious, playful and ENORMOUS Zakhin'Dakh the gryphon!  Zakhin'Dakh has an affinity for maps, as he thinks they look just like looking down into the ground when flying really high.  Probably a good thing he has excellent vision as a raptor, that map looks awfully tiny in his gargantuan talons.

I bet that he could make really detailed maps that are far more accurate than what humans could make by surveying the land from the ground.

It's roughly the size of an elephant--which is rather large compared to a human.

Now that is one handsome, majestic gryphon... who should probably invest in a laminating machine at some point!

My 'Dragondeep' world setting has gryphons that *occasionally* get that large, but only the intensely magical ones.

However, in the description of their eyesight, I have this to say, and this picture sooooo reminded me of it:

"They hunt from the skies unless they’re largely arboreal or grounded in both front and hind end. All breeds of Griffin have eyesight that is the keenest on the planet. Though it varies by breed and certainly by individual, a printed page this size could easily be read in detail (and sometimes proofread) (and definitely critiqued) by a Griff standing more than 100 yards away"

Yay, it's done!

It really turned out awesome! I love the way his feathers and fur turned out. And his talons. And his tail. And... well, pretty much everything. The size difference between him and the map is fun, too... but I'm definitely going to have to commission another piece with him next to something more familiar for size comparison sometime!

Well, actually, I did get a reference sheet of him done recently... it's on his character page now: figmentregistry.wikidot.com/fi…

14 hours how can you digital paint for so long!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KatieHofgard In reply to MightyRaptor [2015-08-27 01:48:29 +0000 UTC]

I don't paint for that many hours in a row, that would be really unhealthy!  But I do keep track of how many hours I spend each day on a piece, then add it up when I'm done.

MightyRaptor In reply to KatieHofgard [2015-08-27 01:53:47 +0000 UTC]

Well be carful the biggest issue with some artists they would constantly spend hours getting things done and if you don't get enough exercise you'd probably would pass out, most likely but I know your hand would be in much pain and stress.

I am very aware of the health risks of painting or sitting down too long, I've been a full time freelance illustrator for 6 years.  I have my own self care routine set, thanks!

Benign-Dragon [2015-08-27 00:36:06 +0000 UTC]

It would be nice if you could draw him near something we know, like a tree or lake, so we can see that he is as huge as you say. If we can't see how huge he is, why say his size?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

KatieHofgard In reply to Benign-Dragon [2015-08-27 00:44:07 +0000 UTC]

Quite simply, it's because the client paid for a piece with no background elements.   The artist's description exists for a reason also, if I didn't think it important or interesting, I would not have included it in the description.

Almonihah In reply to KatieHofgard [2015-08-27 02:09:27 +0000 UTC]

I'm probably going to pay for a piece that *does* have him next to something.

Apologies for the nit-pick, but you wrote that he is 17 inches long and 9 inches at the shoulder as opposed to feet.
