Description Work for the future TeaFeathers art book, funded through Patreon! A pylura glass specialist from the Sa’Dimali, a tribe of fierce desert dwelling Alecani and Pylura. Snakes are central to Sa'Dimali culture, as is glass making and glass artisanship. This individual is making a portrait of their companion snake out of a deep blue-green glass. Sa'Dimali often have snake companions, some of which may be magically blessed to be able to communicate with their chosen pylura or alecani. Maybe this one is telling her pylura, "be sure to get my good side!"

Here's the companion piece to this one -TeaFeathers - Sa'Dimali Snake Wrangler

This is super cool, but I confess I'm not sure how one would *carve* glass without the whole thing shattering!

Stunning piece. The pylura are so sweet and your world at large is very fascinating. I'm curious though, as far as I know I don't think its actually possible to carve such large pieces of glass by hammer and chiseling it in this way, certainly not without machine assistance at any rate - do the pylura make a special kind of glass, tool, or magic, to do this? Do they ever partake in glass blowing and sculpting glass from a molten state?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KatieHofgard In reply to Goregoat [2019-01-06 00:36:53 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so muchΒ  Some glass carving is possible to an extent, but the Pylura also work with unrealistic forms of glass (tempered for extreme strength, imbued with magical properties etc) so I figured chiseling and sanding would be ok!

Goregoat In reply to KatieHofgard [2019-01-06 10:06:43 +0000 UTC]

Wonderful! That makes sense - I imagine magically imbued glass behaving almost something like resin or hard plastic when it needs to. The depth and thought in your species' cultures and magics are so intriguing and memorable.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

KatieHofgard In reply to Veratai [2019-01-06 00:40:04 +0000 UTC]

A little bit of real life glass carving is possible, but not really as shown here I don't think!Β  Pylura have cool magical techniques to reinforce the glass, and to imbue it with other neat properties.

It can. If ice carvings exist (and ice behaves in a similar way to glass sometimes) then why not?

Veratai In reply to Thierry-ThefoxGamer [2019-01-05 12:59:52 +0000 UTC]

Β yeah you're right i also remembered that there is also carved obsidian, and it is also a type of glass

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

lapis-lazuri In reply to Thierry-ThefoxGamer [2019-01-05 12:47:07 +0000 UTC]

Ermm.... because glass is substantially harder? I'm not a specialist, but in my opinion if you try carving glass with a chisel and a hammer you'll just carve it into a pile of shattered glass pieces.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Thierry-ThefoxGamer In reply to lapis-lazuri [2019-01-05 12:56:31 +0000 UTC]

From a quick search (I'm using a hardness scale) glass has a hardness of 5.5 and ice of about 1.5 so sure (10 is diamond, 1 is Talc for example), there is some difference. However, the hardness should not effect how it can be carved because people carve things out of stone, and stones like granite have a hardness of 6-7. If you're thinking about glass shattering, that does not happen as easily when it's a solid structure. We're just used to seeing it shatter easily because we use them as thin, delicate panes on windows. Either way it's a awesome piece of art!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

lapis-lazuri In reply to Thierry-ThefoxGamer [2019-01-05 13:55:47 +0000 UTC]

It isn't only the hardness, but its combination with other properties of the material, which, in the case of glass, I believe, make it uncarvable. Not with a chisel. Sure, there are techniques to carve and etch glass, but I seriously doubt that includes a chisel and a hammer. If you know better, show me an example of something carved this way.

I don't deny it's a beautiful piece.

Thierry-ThefoxGamer In reply to lapis-lazuri [2019-01-05 14:28:30 +0000 UTC]

To be honest I probably don't know better lol, i can see what you mean by that. Possibly if it was to carve surface details? Because in retrospect if it was made into a very jagged shape like that using only a chisel, that would seem close to impossible.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

lapis-lazuri In reply to Thierry-ThefoxGamer [2019-01-05 14:32:58 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn't know. As far as I know, chiselwork is jagged by definition. That's why you move to smaller and smaller chisels as you work on refining details, but in the end you still gotta go through with it with sandpaper to make it smooth, it's not quite possible with a chisel, I think. And jagged shapes are rather easy and natural to do with one, because that's the shape the chisel cuts anyway. Only, not on glass.
Btw, sandpaper wouldn't work on glass either. Not hard enough.
