impressive shading and detailing.
ive recently got into oils.. its totally different from digital
You seem to have a similar digital style as traditional.. how do you do that?

Hi, thanks
i haven't tried oil yet... definately going to...
on the digital style looking like traditional...
all's done in painter.
for most of the recent digitals (excluding the hugh jackman and the horse rider)
i used watercolor/digital watercolor for the base layer. then i used square chalk to do the details. the texture are custom made, i scan the texture of actual gesso on board to create that.

just been wondering about the topic why some digital artist mimic the traditional look! if one is already painting digital.. why not look like a digital painting?

those are college assignments which they want us to mimic traditional. Persoanlly, i don't mind to mimic traditional or paint like digital (whatever that means). As for why use digital to mimic traditional, there are many reasons. some that i can give you is 1. time, a real oil may take far longer time to complete/dry but digital normally would be faster if something that looks like oil is required and the deadline is shorter than traditionally allowed. 2. some of the materials may not be readily available locally, and at time it may be costly for some students like us to buy all of the real material, so at least can try something 'different' through digital. But i guess they just wants us to try mimic for the time being... i mean at the end of the day it is still up to us however we want to apply the medium. As for what is digital painting that looks like digital, how to define it, i guess that i'm not sure yet. i'll explore more for the time being and see how it goes.

i think its an interesting subject. i started thinking about those things when i touched the traditional medium. I could not mimic a digital look, which im used to.
painting traditionally, in my opinion, is quite alot of freedom because whatever you do with the painting it will look like traditional painting.
Maybe the digital medium hasn't been explored enough to accept what digital paintings/art look like. I look at applications like painter and wonder whats the point of it. If its supposed to look traditional, then its escaping from its own media. I can understand you if you say that you have to make it look like oils and acryls because the teachers wants it.
I don't know what a digital painting look like

when i think about digital paintings...maybe things from cgtalk will come to mind... things like Linda's 'super picture perfect'... digital allow more precision as you can zoom in more. Like Craig Mullins, he does both digital and traditional, his digital style still carries similarity with his traditional one yet it is quite distinctive. Maybe for people like me who starts off using traditional more, the mentality or perception when doing digital may likely be influenced by the traditional media approch.
About application like painter... let's say watercolor... i think it is pretty pointless and much more time consuming using digital to mimic than doing it actually with brush on paper. However, i do find the tool useful for other purpose like creating some texture on digital (non-mimic) painting.
