How did you make the Starglasses? Me and my friends recently began using Plexiglass to make Kamina glasses, and have gotten fairly good at it. So, we're thinking of trying to make the legendary Starglasses. Any advice, oh King of Cosplay?
Yeah, I'll probably be annoying you over the next few months about tips and tricks. My cosplay is a bit ambitious for a newbie. I'm going to make a Gurren Lagann suit. Any advice on that? My current plan is using Styrene + Craft Foam and Wonderflex, but I've heard you mention Paperclay as something useful. I have until Otakon 2010 to get this done (Julyish), but I've got free time, determination, and a desire to make up for my crappy Phoenix Wright Cosplay from last year. Thanks in advance!

My original pair of starglasses were 1/16" thick red acrylic (plexiglass) that I shaped with an iron and a lot of patience. They were extremely hard to make xD I have made more recent pairs from thin red PVC sheeting, its more the thickness of a couple pieces of paper. You can find it at a local or online hobby store. This style was pretty easy to make.
For a mecha, craftfoam is a good method to use. Wonderflex/styrene are good for details. Im hopefully making a king kittan mech this spring, im planning on making the base out of cardboard and covering it with either foamboard or cardstock. Its a bit cheaper and pretty easy to work with.

Sounds good. Did you bend the plastic at only the middle, like with Kamina glasses, or did you do a bend for every point of the starglasses? If it's just one bend, then me and my friends need only to figure out how to heat that much plastic at once without burning it, but if an iron actually works, then we have nothing to fear. We used a lighter to bend our Kamina glasses, but if we held it on too long it stained.
I've started on my suit over the last week, and one of my artistically talented friends is helping me with it. We're doing the helmet right now. We used an old baseball helmet that we shaved the visor off of and are hotgluing craft foam to it. We're going to cut pieces of wood for the "mutton chops" and the "horns" of Gurren Lagann, then add craft foam for detail. Styrene should be here within the week.
Thanks a ton, KaZzu! Good luck with your King Kittan!
