This is a really good capture .

As said above, the elephant looks very wise and all the wrinkles really supports that .

Is it a HDR?

Nope, no HDR. Just the regular old "play with the manual settings and a click of a button"...Is HDR better?

Well, it looks kind of like a HDR photo . HDR is just a couple of photos taken right after each others, with different exposure. That makes the detail level very high
