Description Sooo... I was going through my WIP folder to see if there were any old pieces that might be salvageable, and I was surprised at how much I still liked this one, even though I started it about a year ago and thought I had given up on it forever.

The daizhev (singular: daizha) are a race of merpeople who live in the bay of Maidhev off the coast of Claderr. The waters they live in are very cold, so they're more dolphinlike than fish, and much more humanlike than the fishy merpeople who live in the tropical seas.
In fact, Princess Lalachai, the only royal born a wizard for hundreds of years, caused the biggest scandal in CladerΓ© history when she abdicated her claim to the throne by turning herself into a mermaid and running away to live with them out in the bay. (I also have an old lineart of Lalachai that's been rattling around for awhile and I need to color.)
I always liked to imagine them rising out of the freezing water, indistinct in the early-morning fog, and asking, "Are you coming with us?"

Anyway. I sure hope you guys enjoy the wanderings of my imaginary histories.

I love the cold colors... they really give you a sense of the chill in the atmosphere where they live. and yet they look so noble. just what mermaids should be like ^^

I love imaginary histories! ^-^ What a neat picture, too! I like the sort of texture it has that makes it look like an old oil painting, too, almost.
It does look quite cold, too.
Mer kind of people have always interested me, I think (though pretty much any fictional kind of people interest me). I once had a dream (the source of most my inspiration) where there were these mer-people who spoke by singing, similar to how a whale communicates, and in the dream it showed their experience with humans and trying to eat their food and such (which didn't work). That helped quite a lot of development on my own imaginary stuff, though =}

Hurray for Kecky's imaginary histories! You know, I like this picture--the beings are so ethereal--but I think the history is what really makes it for me! I want to run off with merpeople, too!!!
Cheers!

Duuude, there's something really fun and stylistic about this despite the somewhat sombre, tired atmosphere - like, for example, I love the stylistic way you approached the water with big, simplified shapes, and yet it still has the distinct flow and movement of water. :3 And I enjoy the depth of space and illusion of fog created by the greyed out figures contrasting with the solid, more colorful one closest to the front of the image. The middle girl has beautiful facial features and hair, too, yum. Love her nose.

Thank you! I'm glad you think the water looks okay; I had such trouble with that.

Thank you! I agree, there's always been something weird about his face, but by this point I just wanted to finish it.

I really don't have the time right now; I've got a ton of schoolwork piled up and then I'm going to be working full-time this summer.... I really shouldn't even be doing art for myself. Sorry! Maybe someday!!

I love the texture of the "fog", it's adds such a mystical air to the image and it looks almost like old glass, or leaf veins. The hair is also amazing, not just in colour but in the actual feel of being wet. The backlighting from the water is great too, but I'm not sure if the colour matches what it should be from water so dark. The male daizha at the front is so pretty, but I think is left eye is a bit wonky. Might be perspective though. Other than that, this is a very beautiful and wonderfully atmospheric picture.

Thank you! The eye is definitely wonky. Like I said, I started this a long time ago, but I thought it was messed up even then. Good point about the water though! Thanks for pointing that out.
