Description
Tsarevitch Alexei Nicholaievitch and Grand Duchess Tatiana Nicholaievna Romanov. From a photograph circa 1916.This is a sketch I made whilst driving to Montreal for my mother's date of birth, being subsequently bored for 2 hours and coincidentally having paper, pencil and a copy of The Kitchen Boy. Tatiana was actually added after when I decided it was potentially having potential.
Coloured by Holly James Daugherty. We worked together on this as one counteractive force. Thank you : {D

Thank you! Robert K. Massie's 1967 book "Nicholas and Alexandra" gives varying accounts of the hair and eye color of the Tsar's family, so it's kind of hard to know who had what. He jumps back and forth with Empress Alexandra, giving her golden hair or red-gold hair. He gives no mention of Nicholas's hair color; from the imperial portraits, the blue-eyed Nicholas seemed to have had either very dark brown hair or dark reddish-brown hair. The strangest description is of Grand Duchess Olga having "chestnut-blonde hair". Chestnut-blonde? What kind of hair color is that? Never heard of it.
Another question. Was Alexei's uniform really black and gold, like you have it in the drawing?

Hmm, I would say it's a very light brown with catches of gold in it. Not too blonde, but a close call between both colours. My guess is as good as yours. Here the uniform's colours were left entirely to my friend Holly's imagination. They may have been, or they may have been a navy blue. It's all sort of guessing since we're only left with black and white.

Actually I must say I think his hair here looks like it would have if you ask me.

His hair was light brown with a coppery glint. This is a reddish brown. Same thing. His hair wasn't that red and neither was Alexandra's.
