Description On a dark winter's night that seemed colder and harsher than any before, an old mage with a young apprentice was lead to a bundle of blankets in a city alleyway by fairies. The old mage thanked the fairies by giving them little crystallized flower buds before they made their leave. He walked quietly towards the bundle of blankets, picking it up with extreme care to the young apprentice's surprise. He wondered why his teacher was so careful, yet had a dejected look spread across his face. Curiosity piqued the young boy's interest and tried to stand on tiptoe to get a better look at the bundle. The mage flicked the boy's nose and shook his head, signaling the boy to behave. The boy was sullen; he didn't like it when his teacher scolded him like that.

The mage walked on, waving his hand at the boy to follow. The old mage chanted ancient words lost over the decades and a bright circle engulfed the two in white light. In a blink of an eye, the two were back at their home in Scotland. As the two entered their farmhouse, their housekeepers who happened to be changelings greeted them. They knew instantly what to do. One of them dashed to the hearth and set a warm, welcoming fire while the other was in the kitchen fixing hot food and warmed up a pitcher of milk.

The mage sat on the floor by the fire, the young boy close at hand as the man unwrapped a child from the bundle. She clutched into the blankets for dear life, trying to keep warm, eyes closed tightly. Her skin blotched with dark marks; on the verge of hypothermia. The changeling who set the fire had fetched several wool blankets and bundled the child up. The other changeling hurried into the room with a silver tray lined with food and the pitcher of milk and poured the little girl a glass. She sniffed the air as the glass was under her nose and she finally opened her eyes; heterochromia eyes, one resembled golden champagne and the other a shimmering silver pool of moonlight.

She grabbed the glass of milk carefully as her body was still trembling from the cold. She sipped at it for a few seconds before gulping the whole thing down in one go. The changelings sat close to the three and kept a close eye on the smallest one, handing her food when she would reach for something. She glanced about the fire lit room, at the changelings, and at the mage and the apprentice. Her glance strayed at the apprentice; looking him over several times. They were absorbed in each others gazes

She reached out a tiny hand towards him and he instinctively took a hold of her hand gingerly. Her hand was so small compared to his and was warming up quickly in his grasp. Her cheeks were bright pink in contrast to her now ivory skin. Her shoulder length chocolate hair was straight as a pin and had a few cowlicks from being wrapped up in the blankets for who knows how long. He continued to hold her hand in his and she let out a soft, musical giggle that wrung in everyone's ears. Both changelings and the mage smiled in joy to her laughter but the boy sat there; eyes wide with a mixture of shock and amazement. A warm, fuzzy feeling welled up inside of him, a feeling he couldn't place.

The changelings murmured amongst each other and with other little fairies that came buzzing into the warm home. Word spreads quickly between fairies when there’s a new presence in the home of the old mage. Out of curiosity a few popped in to see for themselves the new being, as it wasn’t very often the mage brought one in. He was even reluctant to take on an apprentice a few years ago but as many had pointed out, he was getting older and needed to pass on his knowledge to a young one. They were all in awe at this child who resembled a cherub. Some were even more amazed at her two different colored eyes. She broke her gaze from the boy to look over the glittering creatures flying above her head. Instead of being frightened as most might be, she was intrigued by the non-human entities. She studied them, following their flitting movements with her eyes and giggled once again as they danced on top of the boys head.

He chewed on the inside of his cheek as he began to pout. He was starting to feel a little jealous that her gaze was stuck on the fairies prancing on his head. Her giggling was contagious because now everyone in the room started to laugh at the humorous sight. The fairies that danced on his head glided to his shoulders and perched themselves like birds. They chittered together quietly as they observed the changelings hanging closely by the mage holding the little girl. It indeed must have been a very strange sight.

The little girl yawned and her arm drooped as her eyes fluttered to a close. She fell asleep in an instant, but the boy still held her tiny hand. He peered over his shoulder quickly and even the fairies were looking rather sleepy. He looked back at the girl’s sleeping face and was at a loss that anyone could ever think of abandoning this child. One of the changelings placed its hand on his; he let go and the changeling took the child from the mage's arms.

Everyone got up from the floor and followed the changeling carrying the girl, including the sleepy fairies; they left sparkles of light in their trail as they followed close by. It brought her to one of the spare bedrooms towards the back of the house on the first floor. With a bed already made, it gently placed her under the large and fluffy comforter and tucked her in. A light kiss was placed upon her forehead, wishing her the sweetest of dreams and a pleasant sleep. The other fairies joined the little girl in the bed and made themselves comfortable along the headboard. Their little bodies glowed light a soft night-light.

The boy looked up at the mage with concerned eyes, the man nodded in approval. The boy hurried into the room with the utmost of silence and climbed into the bed with her. She turned around in her sleep and attached herself to him. He buried his face in her hair, which smelled like burnt wood from the fire in the hearth. The two slept soundly all throughout the night. The mage spoke with both the changelings for quite some time as the two young ones slept and they made a final decision about what to do with the girl.
