Sigh... alright. I guess I'll submit this up now. I actually had this ready (and would tweak it every now and then) for 2 weeks and I've been patiently waiting to submit this for the Birthday Contest.
But I honestly don't think I have a standing chance in winning.
I'm just not nearly as popular as people who've had their dA for a while and technically I've only been active for a month... That and there are just some really good entries....
Alright, enough of this pessimism. Where's MY Orihime when I need her?
And yes, I just referred to a recent Bleach chapter title haha!

Good question! It's asked a lot since it's not canon and it was a short lived (canon) phase. There are so many better answers given out there, but I could give you something short.
It was a forbidden romance. It included character development/progression. Orihime showed a side no one else had ever witnessed towards Ulquiorra and she also taught Ulquiorra that life was not meaningless/empty.
Plus, he said something like "This here in my hand... the heart" while Orihime was "in" it is sooo... ambiguous.
tl;dr: It was a very, very deep relationship.

But if he were still alive, I assure you it'd be so much more epic... It actually already is (it was recently rated #2 in Top Bleach Couples from the japanese audience), but goodness. It had so much potential.
