Yaaayyyy ... your crocuses came out already; mine are just about to bloom!

They usually emerge at the same time every year, regardless of snow and frost. I have had these 7-8 Crocuses for some 20+ years now, but they never seem to reproduce. Do you know how to make them multiply?

My experience with crocuses is the same; perhaps their growing season is short, therefore don't store enough energy for the bulbs to multiply.  We have lots of inexpensive bulbs imported from Netherland ($2.50 for 12 bulbs of crocus).  As long as I can keep up with the gardening work, I'll plant more and more crocuses!

I think you're right, Cecily. They have probably been cultivated for too many years and have lost the ability to multiply the natural way. I remember seeing a large colony of wild Crocuses in our local forest, but it's probably too late now to go and find them and dig a few up for the garden. Anyway, they are quite cheap to buy, as you said, and delightful to watch during the short time they bloom

I just spoke to my neighbour and he thought they were genetically modified to NOT reproduce. Crocuses, like many other bulb plants, are a huge export article so the greenhouse owners earn more money when we have to pay for each and every single bulb. I think he has a valid point.

Oh, that’s an interesting hypothesis (genetically modified)! Although there’s always a trade-off for reproduction that the mother plant tends to stay healthier and live longer without reproduction and vice versa.  I’ve appreciated the crocuses’ reliable return year after year and they never overpopulate the garden; meanwhile I have the opportunity to plant different varieties of crocuses as time goes on.
