This is a piece that I did for a family member's baby shower. For a personal touch, I painted the family's 2 cats in the country folk scene. Those 2 cats are so sweet and loveable, they were stray cats where the family lives. Poor things smelled like soot and ash because the dug in garbage cans for food. So they got th e names Smokey and Ashes.
I really like how the colors ended up. Green just felt like the right color so I went with it. All the others fell into place after it.

Aw such a cute story behind the cats haha, do you know if they were siblings? They do look like it from your drawing anyways. Haha having the cats help welcome the baby is a cute idea. I know the cats we had liked little me too! A new person to bother for food but can't give them any XD?

Yup, those cats are siblings, they were born as strays from the same litter. They are very sweet, though the kid is home now, I hear the cats are scared to death of it!

I have some a technical question, though:
Do you use masking fluid while you work? If not, how do you (for example) keep the green of the wallpaper from bleeding into the baby basket and the other foreground elements?

Yes, I use masking fluid, though I have to really plan my piece to be sure where I want to use it. I do 'cheat' on some and put white goauche to create white areas. Some of your fine artists do not care for it, but illustrators use it liberally. I use whichever seems to suit my purposes.
Actually on this piece, I didn't use any, I just painted carefully with my brush not loaded with much water.

Yeah, good brushes (not the most expensive though) help me a lot, you'll get there.
Actually, these are brushes I use, not the cheapest, but they are not natural bristles, so very economical and durable
