Description This is "Domicile" for the upcoming Neighbors show at Young Blood Gallery, opening December 3rd. It measures 12" x 16" and was painted in watercolor.

The idea of the show was to portray our neighbors. As I don't quite interact with my neighbors, I thought to make my piece about what I see outside my living room window. My husband and I love feeding the birds in our yard, and we have a beautiful birch tree that we hang our feeders on. Of the birds, we have a large family of cardinals. I'm always in awe of their coloring, especially the female. Also their devotion to one another - how the male feeds the female when they're mating and when they have babies, the male feeds the chicks. Furthermore, there is a wild rose bush that is entwined with the birch tree, hence the roses.

I like the birch. Did you paint around the branches or erase them out with bleach?

What does your cat think of the birds?

Thanks! I painted around the branches. I don't use bleach anymore and I stopped tea staining paper since I found that some pieces began showing spots of mold...

The cats LOVE the birds.

Could you ad a preservative to the mix to prevent the mold?
Salt is an obvious one but I'm not sure what that would do to the paper, paints brushes etc.

Yeah probably. By the time I saw that mold made its way into a couple of pieces (not all of them, don't know why...), I had already moved on from tea staining. :/
