Description ~MK1 SciFi Madoka~

Have been working on a new outfit for Aiko3 and Madoka called "MK1 SciFi" and this is the progress so far. The boots are not mine, but I created everything else in there. Haven't decided on the colors yet, but so far it's pink and blue. Still fixing a number of JCM problems that are typical of Aiko3.

Thanks for coming by!

Thanks! I create the outfit she's wearing, but this was not the final version just yet. I posted later pics showing the complete uniform after this one. ^^

I really like the looks of Madoka, so I'll try my hands at her, but you know it's not gonna look as great as you do it hommes

Madoka is my gallery's featured Anime girl, and that's a good choice because you will find *lots* of reference images of her in my gallery.

Hahah, cool.
Excellent work on the monotonous shading! I always find it hard to make things seem to have depth with this style of shading, but this seemed so alive. Simply love this one. Plus, it's madoka too. I've grown a natural liking for the model.

Thank you! The toon shading was done with image-based lighting (IBL) while the sense of depth was added with an extra key light strategically placed to add a specular component that IBL cannot provide. The advantage of using this method is that it doesn't require changing all of the materials in the model as most other methods require.

Router-Jax In reply to ken1171 [2007-04-29 03:15:49 +0000 UTC]

Wow, that sounds deep?
Yet it makes a fine work for being simpler to work on. As much as Im curious with.. IBLs are static lightings that won't change no matter where it is viewed from? Im just taking a guess.. Can't sure it's right.

ken1171 In reply to Router-Jax [2007-04-29 04:47:54 +0000 UTC]

IBL means that the program will automatically create an infinite number of lights to lit the scene based on an image "map" you provide yourself. It's an advanced lighting method that can be very helpful in many cases. I for instance use it to create shading effects. ^_^

Image map as in similar to masks? From the way it works, it sounds the same... Is it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ken1171 In reply to Router-Jax [2007-04-29 08:51:14 +0000 UTC]

Not really. IBL uses images (bitmaps) to describe the number, intensity, color and direction of light sources in a scene.

Router-Jax In reply to ken1171 [2007-04-29 15:07:43 +0000 UTC]

Ohh I see.. I don't catch much of it, but it does sound different compared to masks. Then again I've never meddled with 3d stuffs. It's clear that I don't know.

Anyways, much thanks for the information.

Thank you! I have to try different colors for different effects.
I am just terrible choosing colors, though.
It would be good if I had art classes where they teach the theory behind colors and how they go together. ^^

Kazumy In reply to ken1171 [2007-04-27 00:35:25 +0000 UTC]

Nah its better to trial by error
Your color techniques are perfect my friend

ken1171 In reply to Kazumy [2007-04-27 07:56:10 +0000 UTC]

The way I do is indeed trial and error, and sometimes I wish I understood how colors work. In many cases the choice of colors can make a whole difference in the final effect.

Kazumy In reply to ken1171 [2007-04-30 00:50:40 +0000 UTC]

well practice makes perfect.. in my case since i do more coloring pencil than pc colors.. i only get 1 shot at choosing the correct colors..

But your color management skills are incredible my friend

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ken1171 In reply to Kazumy [2007-04-30 05:17:57 +0000 UTC]

I personally think that practice in this case doesn't make perfect because very case is a new case. I came to understand a bit by researching the theories behind the use of colors and that has helped me a bit with my deviations, but I still know very little about it. Thus trial and error.

In your case, you can try many different colors schemes if you do like the professional illustrators do. Once your lineart is finished, make a photocopy of it (or use a scanner + printer if you have them) and then practice different coloring on different copies. This is safe because it preserves the original lineart intact. ^_^

Kazumy In reply to ken1171 [2007-05-01 01:06:12 +0000 UTC]

Well in my form i prefer trial and error and never seen an artbook or a coloring book, heck didn't even know it existed.. hehe

I've never thougth of making a photocpy of the lineart and then trying out diferent colors in it.. thanks for the idea my friend

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ken1171 In reply to Kazumy [2007-05-01 04:31:57 +0000 UTC]

The photocopy method is used around Japanese professional manga studios, where there is no time to redo a lineart in case the coloring gets smeared or something. It also offers the chance to try different versions for different purposes. ^^

Well tried it on my new DA work.. did the colors 3 times in paer and ended coloring in the pc.. since i couldn't figure it out.. i think it came out good ?

ken1171 In reply to Kazumy [2007-05-06 01:28:10 +0000 UTC]

I think one advantage of coloring on a PC is that the colors come out cleaner.

That is true.. but its such a pain in my case to get solors on all corners... while leaving the black line

ken1171 In reply to Kazumy [2007-05-10 05:55:44 +0000 UTC]

You can simply use the bucket tool to fill out areas, plus use layers to be able to change things later. That's how I do it here. ^^
