Very close to her zero-suit, except for a few differences. Honestly I think very few people noticed this wasnβt Samus/her outfit...embarrassingly enough I almost didnβt until I read your description. Dam skin tight catsuit stole my attention for awhile...lol ππ

Aside from the ones on the Gameboy Advance, the very best Metroid games, where the ones Nintendo let an American house develop, the Metroid Prime Trilogy. First person adventure games that flawlessly brought the series into full 3D.Β

I've always loved me some Nintendo too though. As for the character, save for the colossal fuck up that is Metroid Other M, Samus is a takes-no-shit-from-anyone Ellen Ripley sort of character.
The Metroid games are excellent. They're not level based. The game is one giant map. You cannot reach every area of it at once. You have to find upgrades and power ups to gradually progress. Its a system that the later games in the Castlevania series would pick up. If you have a smart phone or a tablet with a BT controller, I highly recommend emulating Super Metroid for the SNES and Metroid Zero Mission and Fusion for the GBA.

Nintendo doesn't port their games to the PC. They're afraid it'll dilute people's reason the buy their hardware.
I mean, they're not wrong. The only reason I own a 2DS, is to play Nintendo first party stuff on it, of which there isn't good emulation of yet.

Yeah, but the handheld itself cost me less than $30. Got it used from a friend.

Speaking of developers who give the PC a lot of love, Bethesda will be releasing what was once a Nintendo 64 exclusive to PC and other platforms soon: Doom 64! I am really looking forward to that! It's a criminally underrated entry in the franchise, because it was "doomed" the be released on a console a lot of people didn't buy back in the day. It has creepy ambient music, really nice pre-rendered 3D sprite graphics, and the puzzle element has been elevated from "flip a switch and find the door" to "Reshape the entire map, to find the way out." in some stages.

So it's one of these 2.5D Doom games?

simplysherbert In reply to ken1171 [2019-07-29 00:57:24 +0000 UTC]
Yes. The original Doom Engine, doesn't use a true 3D space. But it fakes it enough for the player to enjoy themselves.

Yeah, I remember when ID came up with their 2.5D engine because it started what FPS games have become nowadays. GOG is running a deep sale on both Doom and Quake games right now. They have like Doom 1, 2, 3 BFG for like a dollar each.

Yeah. Good prices for good games.
I can play Doom 1 and 2 until the sun explodes.

They complain Doom 3 BFG is somehow bad because the GOG version used an older game engine. Is that so? I haven't even heard of a "BFG" version.

simplysherbert In reply to ken1171 [2019-07-29 19:26:11 +0000 UTC]
The BFG edition isn't terrible, just not the improvement people were hoping for. It was touted as a remaster back in the day, but it's basically a GOTY edition with proper widescreen support, better frame rate, much faster loading times, and all of the weapons have flashlights now. Its not my favorite Doom game, because it doesn't really play like a Doom.Β
It also comes with slightly altered Doom 1 and 2 built in. The changers are thus:
*Because of the American Red Cross throwing a fit, they had to change the icon on the health kit. This is also why Autobot Ratchet had to abandon that symbol.
*When Doom the BFG edition was first released, Wolfenstein was being handled by a different studio, and all Wolfenstein material was excised from that version of Doom 2, for whatever reason.
*Instead of proper title screens, you get a generic hellish background.
*The changes aren't all bad. Doom II has an extra expansion included.

Oh, so that's what the Doom 3 BFG is. Thanks for the info. So looks like ID had to strip it down because of changes in commercial agreements. But what about the game engine? People have complained in the comments that the GOG version used an older engine than the actual game, which would be a downgrade. That was one of the most frequent complain.Β
Oh yes, GOG advertises that Doom 3 BFG ships with Doom 1 and 2 for free. Though I just can't play 2.5D games after having played DOOM (the new one) in full 3D glory. That was good enough, and even revolutionary, on its day - but not anymore. I am even a bit annoyed by how so many games nowadays try to get as retro as possible. It may be amusing for the new generation, but I AM from that time, so it doesn't amuse me anymore. I want better, not worse.

I have the Steam version, so I'm not sure.
2016's Doom was worthy of the name. I hear the sequel will be as well.

Just saw the trailer for Doom Eternal, and it's just amazing. Can't say the same about Wolfenstein Young Blood, though. The reviews are crushing it, even claiming that was the proper way to kill a franchising.

I guess the main complain wasn't even about that, but instead the feminist propaganda deeply embedded into the game design. The same happened to Star Wars movies, and now the new Star Trek Discovery series - replace all men by women in power, men are all reduced to moping idiots, and promote all women to instant Mary Jane's. In the case of theΒ Wolfenstein: Young Blood, replace BJ by his 2 daughters, who had no previous experience with combat, but like Rey in Star Wars, who became a Jedi master with no training, these 2 teenager girls became deadly assassins by wearing a suit. Not one, but both of them, instantly. Then the Nazi soldiers are replaced by bullet sponge robots, and you will play through the same levels over and over again. Sounds like fun?

If the game sells poorly, Bethesda will course correct the franchise. Bad press doesn't bother them, but losing money scares them the most.

Disney didn't care for loosing money after several sales failures with SJW-pushing games and feminism-loaded Star Wars movies. It took them almost 2 billions in losses until they realized something wasn't right, in spite of the massive social media backslash. Bethesda doesn't seem to have learning anything from this, like they have been living on a cave, or think that pushing feminism is more important than money.

Bethesda can't afford to make Disney sized mistakes though. The only reason they survived the Fallout 76 backlash, is because people bought the game anyway.

Let's hope so. Some claim they have raised the bar too high with New Colossus, but that doesn't excuse them for pushing a political agenda in Young Blood. A lot of people at Steam are telling others not to buy this.

simplysherbert In reply to ken1171 [2019-07-30 18:37:15 +0000 UTC]
I just don't feel any compulsion to buy this one.
Even if there wasn't a political agenda shoehorned into it.
The developer is literally saying "Hey, the only way to play this is either with another person, or with an AI that has an extra chromosome!"
That alone killed the game for me.

There is also the complain that the levels are very repetitive, and reuse the same places over and over again. Not to mention the robots are bullet sponges - that can turn fun into frustration pretty quickly. Add to that we can't save the game, and checkpoints give the ammo you had when you died, not when it was saved. What were they thinking?

I wonder if this Samus render gets so much page hits because it's fanart of a popular character, or if because I did something different? I did much better renders and characters than this.

The ironic part is that basically ANY blonde girl with a ponytail in a tight blue suit could be Samus. She's pretty much generic. I wonder what makes people like her so much. Is it something about what she does in the game?

She's Ellen Ripley levels of awesome and cool. Its why Metroid Other M was so poorly received. Suddenly Samus was this overly emotional girl who needed someone else's permission to kick ass! That dog won't hunt, sir!
