I've done a few very detailed scene, tried rendering it in cartoon mode, and I lost the subtleties I wanted to show.

That's where different shaders can make a difference. The one I know that can preserve details is difficult to apply because all scene materials must be replaced and the character becomes all white on preview until rendered. That makes it hard to do minor adjustments on facial expressions and even eye posing.

That is also the reason why I think such shading methods are impractical. ^^

It's too bad there isn't a plugin or a separate app that can do toon renders with just POser/ D|S project files...

Well Poser comes with a built-in toon shader but it doesn't support textures and transparencies...
