Description ~Smoking Hot Mecha Pilot~

This is my first experience with HER, a free female model from Sixus1. Somehow her hip bends terribly, her own native clothes don’t conform correctly, and her facial morphs are basically destructive – but I still wanted to give her a try. Using free models like this is a give and take, and I decided to take it.

This picture is my seventh try to make her look decent and I think it’s passable. The other six tries went straight to the trash bin and I lost a lot of time with them, but in the end HER is adding a different look to my gallery. Maybe next time I will have better luck with HER. I used all sorts of visual effects here, from depth of field, motion blur, to smoke and chroma key background.

Thanks for coming by!

Thank you! It doesn't hurt to try new models, but sometimes it can take time to get used to their particular ways.

Thank you! I might do another one with this girl and mecha later on. ^_^

She's not just smoking hot. But its smoking all over that place after what she did.

You bet - must be a sauna there inside that mecha.

Doesn't look like a very well put together model. It's probably how the poly's were set up that prevents it from deforming properly. It is far better to stick with simple joints with tri's etc. Then complicated ones; because they deform better.

It was a good shot though! I'll remember to send you a copy of my model when I am done it

Well HER is an old model and her general shape is quite decent, but the morphs are not so much.
Guess we can't expect much from a free model. ^____^

You could always try to modify and fix the problems that cause her to morph incorrectly. But yeah, to bad the free stuff isn't always the greatest.

I thought of that, but fixing HER joints will also mean that none of her clothes will fit her anymore. T_T

The best is to frame HER in a way that only shows her good side.

That would probably be the best choice

I think most (if not all) Poser figures leave something to be desired when it comes to posing thighs and shoulders (ball joints), and that is mostly because of Poser's limitations on character rigging without being able to use weight painting. T_T

NHT123 In reply to ken1171 [2007-10-24 20:35:37 +0000 UTC]

I'm just getting into the mess of rigging things; separating every joint from an object then manually tweaking it so it works in the morph envelope in max is not fun.

ken1171 In reply to NHT123 [2007-10-24 22:13:17 +0000 UTC]

I think the most challenging joints are the shoulders and hip-to-thigh because they are ball-joints, while all others are mostly hinge joints. In the same way, rigging the thumb in a hand is equally challenging.

NHT123 In reply to ken1171 [2007-10-25 03:27:49 +0000 UTC]

I tried seperating joints into several parts; it seems to deform slightly better in some cases. The big problems are with linking and sometimes the way it deforms.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ken1171 In reply to NHT123 [2007-10-25 06:38:24 +0000 UTC]

Exactly - the ball-joints themselves don't work alone, they are linked to the next body part and that's where trouble happens. ^^
Sometimes I have to cut off bone links to close-by body parts if they cause undesired indirect deformations.

NHT123 In reply to ken1171 [2007-10-26 02:28:06 +0000 UTC]

To bad it is hard to control what bones effect what part of the mesh; But I think you can paint it now right onto the mesh and it effects that part. Correct me if i'm wrong.

ken1171 In reply to NHT123 [2007-10-26 07:11:11 +0000 UTC]

You are right, except that Poser doesn't support weight painting. Poser rigging is based on objects of influence instead, which lack fine control but make the process much faster to get done. It's a give and take. ^_^

Oh well maybe in the next poser version

ken1171 In reply to NHT123 [2007-10-27 07:32:41 +0000 UTC]

I personally don't think so - Poser existed for over 10 years and the way the figures are rigged will probably never change to keep compatibility that is expected by the vast community that supports it ever since. We also have to remember that Poser is a $260 program that doesn't allow any kind of 3D modeling because as the name says, it is a rendering program. Weight painting sounds a little far fetched on that context. ^^

True, can't there be plug-ins in poser?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ken1171 In reply to NHT123 [2007-10-28 23:12:41 +0000 UTC]

In general it's the opposite, there are now plugins to allow exporting Poser models to be used in more professional programs, such as 3DSMAX, C4D and Maya. ^^

Damn, well good luck then; I am sure with some photoshop editing and post production work some of the worst errors can be cleaned up.

ken1171 In reply to NHT123 [2007-10-29 07:18:42 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, it is a common routine having to clean up bad joint deformations from Poser in postwork.

Sometimes the undesired deformations can be fixed or avoided when still posing the models, and that is my preferred method when possible. ^^

Sounds tricky, there are probably certain positions not suited for individual models then.

Yes, and that is more troublesome to make the outfits conform in such poses, like skirts when sitting down or walking. But there are ways around that and I am going to show some of it in my next pic - posting it tonight in just a minute!

Note how the skirts conform nicely to the poses - unlike most other Poser skirts out there.
