Description Here is the horse rig that I created with the horse model by 13ravens. This rig includes a root bone which allows me to move the whole character around the scene without deforming it, and IK constants.

Here is videos (In three parts) of me creating this rig in blender:

I battle horribly trying to get anything to rig properly in Blender... I've followed tutorials and guides, messed around by myself and so on and I can never get the bones to actually deform the mesh when moved. Even the Rigify addon did nothing useful. Any tips for an exasperated one?

Make sure your rig is even "connected" to the mesh by weightpainting.
A quick way to do this is with Blender's automatic weightpainting - it is not always perfect, but a good starting point.
In object mode, select the mesh then (by holding shift) select the rig as well. Now press Ctrl + P then "With automatic weights"

Hope that helps. Also look into tutorials for weightpainting.

EDIT: oh and make sure you are in pose mode (same menu as object and edit)
