He is meant to be gingerly trying to rummage around in that drawer. He's holding his elbow up on purpose so the sleave doesn't catch on the drawer edge and leave fibres.

The purpose of rattling the box is to unsettle the denser and smaller photograph "pieces" to the bottom of the box. By shifting the lighter paper balls around she creates gaps for the fragments  to slip through.  Gravametric separation is basically what it is, separation by mass, except that word usually used in chemistry in the separation of a mixture of non-miscible liquids by mass.
