It's no secret that I've been struggling with drawing the last couple of years. I just don't have the desire that I used to have for it which makes me sad. Anyway, I decided I'd go back to one of my favorite subjects in one of my favorite Episode 2 looks. Ironically, the first time I drew Natalie Portman as Padme in this outfit was almost 15 years ago! I remember how excited I was to see the first trailers for Episode 2 and using a screen capture to draw her in this outfit. So, it was nice that I actually had a great time drawing this reference and now I hope to resume my Reflections of Padme Collection.The reference is from a screen shot I made using the deleted scene on my Star Wars: Attack of the Clones DVD. Padme and Star Wars belong to Lucasfilm and Disney and not me.

Fabriano Watercolor Hot Press paper 9 x 12
2B and 6B Staedtler pencils
2B, F, 2H, 3B Kimberly pencils
.5 4B, 2B and Howard mechanical pencils
Kneaded eraser and pencil eraser
Blending stumps and Kleenex

If Natalie ever wants an official pencil portrait artist, she will certainly choose you. I always think that your latest Natalie is my favourite, but I truly love this one. her mouth is a real real trick to get right, but you've nailed it here.

I'm surprised by your professed loss of interest in drawing as, having followed your work here and on FB for some time now, I can enthusiastically say that both your technical skill and personal style have continued to evolve in both their complex sophistication and simple straightforward honesty. Take this Padme; it's among your most "photorealistic" portraits and you reflect the character's conflicted heart in the Naboo sequence from Episode II, but you communicate it with a lovely confidence that makes us feel something emotionally right away. (That Top 10 list is constantly changing - - but I'll present it to you soon!)
